Outdoor fall adventures
1. Visit a dog-friendly pumpkin patch
Walk among the pumpkins, take photos and let your dog enjoy new smells. Call or check the patch’s current rules before you go: some allow leashed dogs only in outdoor areas, while others prohibit pets near food or hayrides. Bring water, waste bags and a secure leash.
2. Pick apples at a dog-friendly orchard
An orchard can provide a relaxed sniff-and-stroll outing. Confirm that dogs are permitted in the picking rows and ask whether fallen fruit must be left on the ground. Keep your dog away from treated areas, farm equipment and any fruit or food the orchard does not allow.
3. Take a hike or long foliage walk
Choose a distance your dog can handle rather than treating autumn scenery as a reason to overdo exercise. The American Kennel Club says needs differ by breed and age; build running or longer efforts gradually, take breaks and stop when your dog looks uncomfortable. On the trail, watch for wildlife, poisonous plants and disease-carrying insects, and carry water for both of you. AKC exercise guidance can help you judge readiness.

Holiday traditions, with comfort and safety first
12. Carve pumpkins safely
Keep your dog away from knives, lit candles, batteries, glow products and pumpkin scraps that could cause trouble if swallowed. Finish the carving in a separate area, store tools securely and supervise around the finished decoration. For Halloween hazards, see the AKC safety guidance.
13. Enter a pet costume contest—only if your dog enjoys it
A costume is never required for a festive photo. ASPCA advises not dressing a dog unless you know they love it; clothing must not restrict movement, vision or breathing, and loose or dangling pieces can become choking hazards. A simple bandana may be an alternative when worn safely and supervised. ASPCA’s Halloween guidance covers fit and stress signs.
14. Plan a Thanksgiving menu with a small dog-safe portion
Daily Paws suggests optional small amounts of plain, unseasoned turkey or canned pumpkin without sugar or spices. Treat this as a taste, not a serving of holiday leftovers, and ask your veterinarian about your dog’s specific diet. Keep chocolate, xylitol-containing candy, wrappers and rich or seasoned foods out of reach; ASPCA lists these as serious seasonal risks.
Keep fall outings safe
- Confirm current dog-access, leash and event rules with every orchard, patch, maze, festival or race organizer before you travel.
- Match exertion to your dog’s breed, age, conditioning and comfort. Build running gradually, take breaks and stop for signs of pain, overheating or distress.
- Prevent access to rodenticides, coolant, snakes, unknown mushrooms and wildlife. After suspected poisoning or a snakebite, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center promptly.
- For after-dark walks, use a reflective collar, a secure leash and current identification. Manage your dog near open doors during trick-or-treating and provide a separate quiet room if visitors cause stress.
- Keep candy, wrappers, candles, batteries and detachable costume parts inaccessible. Use dog-specific treats instead of human candy.
Whether your dog thrives at a busy maze or prefers a puzzle beside the sofa, a successful fall activity is one they can enjoy safely. Start with their comfort, then adapt the plan to the weather, venue and day’s energy.
