Hagfish and lampreys have no scales, and blue catfish have smooth, scaleless skin. Some eels and ocean sunfish have scales that are reduced, hidden, or lost. Sharks are different: their rough skin is covered with tooth-like structures called dermal denticles, which NOAA also describes as placoid scales.
Fish with no scales
Some fish lack ordinary scales altogether. NOAA describes sea lampreys as having no scales, fins, or gill covers; NOAA-hosted educational material also identifies hagfish and lampreys as jawless fish without scales.
Blue catfish are a scaled-free example among catfish. NOAA Fisheries describes their skin as smooth and without scales. This applies to blue catfish specifically; it should not be assumed of every catfish species.
Fish whose scales are reduced, hidden, or lost
Not every fish that appears scaleless lacks scales entirely. A NOAA-hosted reference lists most eels and ocean sunfish among fish in which scales may be reduced, concealed, or lost. These are examples of scale variation, not a claim that every individual eel or ocean sunfish is completely scaleless.

Do sharks have scales?
Sharks have tiny, tooth-like structures in their skin called dermal denticles. NOAA Fisheries also calls these placoid scales. They differ from the ordinary overlapping scales many people picture, so “sharks have no scales” is misleading without that distinction. NOAA’s shark facts describes these structures.
Why scales matter to fish science
For some fish, scales can help scientists estimate age. But they are not a reliable tool for every species: NOAA says scales are seldom used to age groundfish because growth rings can crowd together, and scales can erode, shed, and regenerate. Scientists choose aging methods according to the fish and the features available. NOAA Fisheries’ age-and-growth overview explains this limitation.
