They launch at speed, spread enlarged fins to stay aloft, and some regain speed by beating the tail at the surface before gliding again.
What “flying” means for a flying fish
Flying fish are marine fish in the family Exocoetidae. Their name describes what they look like above the surface, not bird-like flight: they do not keep themselves airborne with repeated wingbeats. As Mark McGrouther of the Australian Museum puts it, “Flyingfishes don’t really fly – they glide.”
The distinction matters because a single glide and a journey made up of several glides are not the same measurement. A fish can travel through the air, return to the water, and launch again without having completed one continuous flight.
How flying fish get airborne
- Build speed in the water. The fish accelerates and launches out of the sea.
- Spread its fins. Enlarged pectoral fins act as gliding surfaces, producing lift as air flows over them. Some forms also use enlarged pelvic fins.
- Glide above the surface. The fish follows a fast, relatively flat trajectory rather than flapping to climb or remain aloft.
- In some species, regain speed at the surface. The fish can dip the lower lobe of its tail into the water and beat it, then continue into another glide.
The tail-assisted surface run is called taxiing. A 2010 paper in the Journal of Experimental Biology describes how this behavior can restore speed when a fish slows or returns to the water. It helps explain why a reported journey may comprise several glides separated by contact with the surface.

How far and fast can they glide?
The National Wildlife Federation reports that flying fish can reach speeds above 35 miles (56 kilometers) per hour before takeoff and glide as far as 650 feet (200 meters). These are that organization’s reported figures, not a guarantee for every species or every launch; the page does not state a publication date.
Those figures describe a reported speed and glide distance. They should not be treated as one family-wide record for uninterrupted flight: species differ in gliding ability, and a longer journey may include repeated glides and tail-assisted taxiing. The available sources do not establish a single maximum distance that applies across the family.

Do all flying fish glide the same way?
No. A 1990 study by F. E. Fish compared fin and body dimensions across six genera and described differences relevant to gliding performance. The 2011 account of flying-fish systematics likewise discusses variation in gliding capacity across the family. Enlarged pectoral fins are central to the glide, but exact performance should not be assumed to be identical among species.
