Fish can end up falling from the sky in rare events known as animal rain. A waterspout or powerful storm updraft may lift small fish from water and carry them before releasing them as the air circulation weakens. Fish falls have been reported, and specimens were collected in at least one well-documented case, but the exact cause has not been established for every report.
How can fish fall from the sky?
The best-known explanation involves a waterspout: a rotating column of air over water that can draw up water and small organisms near the surface. NOAA defines a waterspout as “a whirling column of air and water mist.” If the circulation moves over land or loses strength, material it has carried may fall back to the ground.
The Library of Congress says most scientists agree that waterspouts can pull up fish, frogs, salt or stones and deposit them as the circulation weakens. NOAA distinguishes fair-weather waterspouts, which develop upward from the water surface, from tornadic waterspouts, which are tornadoes that form over water or move from land to water.
A waterspout is not confirmed in every animal-rain report. The Library of Congress also notes that exceptionally strong updrafts over land could lift lightweight organisms or organic material. Without weather observations from the time and place, it may be impossible to tell which mechanism was involved.

What evidence shows that fish rain is real?
Reports vary in strength. An eyewitness who sees fish falling provides a different kind of evidence from finding fish on the ground after a storm. Collected specimens can confirm that the animals were real and help identify them, but they do not, by themselves, establish how the fish got there.
- Witnessed fall: People report seeing animals descend during or after a storm.
- Collected specimens: Physical samples establish that animals were present, though not necessarily how they arrived.
- Weather evidence: Observations of a nearby waterspout or powerful storm would help support a proposed lifting mechanism.
- Alternative explanations: Flooding and runoff can leave fish on land after a storm, creating the impression of a fall when nobody witnessed one.
The available government sources do not establish a reliable global count or frequency for fish-rain events. Treat claims about how often they happen with caution.

Where have fish or other animals reportedly fallen?
Marksville, Louisiana, in 1947
On October 23, 1947, Louisiana Department of Wildlife biologist A.D. Bajkov reported fish scattered across streets, roofs and yards in Marksville. He personally collected a jar of intact specimens to distribute to museums, according to the Library of Congress. The collected fish support the report that fish were present; the account does not prove the precise weather mechanism that put them there.
Lajamanu, Australia, in 2010
In late February 2010, residents of Lajamanu in Australia’s Northern Territory reported hundreds of spangled perch falling across the town. Eyewitness Christine Balmer, quoted by the Library of Congress, said the fish fell “in their hundreds and hundreds.” This is a reported fish-fall event; the account does not establish the exact route or lifting process.

Odzaci, Serbia, in 2005
After a storm on June 7, 2005, thousands of frogs were reported in Odzaci, Serbia. Climatologist Slavisa Ignjatovic said strong winds could have lifted them, according to the Library of Congress. This is an animal-rain comparison, not an example of fish falling.
How can you tell a reported fall from fish left by flooding?
The most useful distinction is whether anyone saw the animals fall. A direct observation made during the event is stronger evidence of a fall from the air than a later discovery after heavy rain. Nearby open water, a reported waterspout, weather records and the condition and distribution of collected fish can all help assess a particular account, but none should be treated as proof unless it was documented for that event.

Some reports involve one species or similarly sized animals. That pattern is consistent with shared transport and deposition conditions, but it does not identify the mechanism on its own. For any specific event, the cause remains uncertain if there are no eyewitnesses or relevant weather observations.

Not every report can be verified to the same standard, but fish rain is not inherently a hoax: the Library of Congress records reports that include eyewitness accounts and, in Marksville, collected specimens. Those details support the occurrence of reported fish falls without proving that every story is accurate or that every event was caused by a waterspout.
