What Is the Habitat of a Starfish?

Starfish, properly called sea stars, are marine saltwater animals found in every ocean. Their habitats range from intertidal rocks and tide pools to sand, mud, kelp, eelgrass and deep-sea bottoms.

Starfish—more accurately called sea stars—live in saltwater habitats in every ocean. Depending on the species, they may occupy wave-washed intertidal shores, shallow coastal waters, kelp and eelgrass beds, rocky or coral seafloors, sandy and muddy bottoms, or the deep sea. They are marine animals, not animals that live on land or permanently on the beach.

Where do sea stars live?

NOAA states that approximately 2,000 sea star species live in marine waters and that sea stars live only in saltwater. Their habitats extend across the world’s oceans, but no single seafloor environment describes the whole group.

A sea star found in a tide pool may live very differently from one on a deep continental-shelf seafloor. Habitat depends on the species and on local conditions such as depth, substrate, wave exposure, currents, temperature, and salinity.

Do starfish live on the beach?

Some sea stars live in the intertidal zone, the area between high and low tide. At low tide, these animals can be visible in tide pools or attached to exposed rocks; at high tide, they are underwater again. This temporary exposure does not make them terrestrial beach animals. Sea stars require marine saltwater throughout their life cycle.

What kinds of seafloor habitats do sea stars use?

Sea stars occupy a broad range of underwater settings. Depending on the species, they may be associated with:

  • Rocky shores and bedrock: solid surfaces that withstand waves and provide crevices or attachment points.
  • Boulders and cobble: coarse, mobile or partly mobile rock on shallow seafloors.
  • Coral and other reef structure: complex hard-bottom habitat in suitable marine regions.
  • Sand and mud: softer sediments where some species crawl across or rest on the bottom.
  • Shell deposits: shell hash and other accumulated shell material on the seafloor.
  • Kelp forests and eelgrass meadows: vegetated habitats that provide structure and food-producing communities.
  • Open deep-sea bottom: deeper marine environments occupied by species adapted to low light, colder water, and greater pressure.

The sunflower sea star is an official example of a habitat generalist: NOAA Fisheries describes it as occurring on “mud, sand, cobble, shell hash, boulders, and bedrock,” as well as in association with eelgrass meadows and kelp forests.

How habitat differs among sea star species

To compare sea-star habitats accurately, describe several dimensions rather than naming only a depth or a type of rock.

Habitat dimension Possible conditions Why it matters
Vertical zone Intertidal, shallow subtidal, or deeper seafloor Controls exposure to air, pressure, light, temperature, and wave action.
Substrate Bedrock, boulders, cobble, shell material, sand, or mud Influences stability, movement, shelter, and access to prey.
Vegetation or structure Kelp, eelgrass, reef, crevices, or open sediment Provides physical shelter and supports different food webs.
Local water conditions Currents, wave exposure, temperature, and salinity Determines whether a species can survive and where it is concentrated.

NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary identifies seafloor geology, substrate, currents, wave exposure, depth, and a low-salinity river plume as factors that affect marine-invertebrate distribution. These variables can make two nearby coastlines suitable for different species or support different densities of the same species.

Sunflower sea star habitat: a species-specific example

The sunflower sea star (Pycnopodia helianthoides) is native to Northeast Pacific marine waters from northern Baja California, Mexico, north to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

NOAA Fisheries reports this species from a few feet to more than 1,400 feet. It is generally encountered shallower than 120 feet, however, so the deeper record should not be treated as its usual habitat. The species is associated with mud, sand, cobble, shell hash, boulders, bedrock, eelgrass meadows, and kelp forests.

Those range and depth figures apply to the sunflower sea star, not to all sea stars. The sources reviewed do not establish one maximum depth for the entire sea-star group. Smithsonian describes echinoderms as a broader group occurring at depths exceeding three miles, but that statement cannot be converted into a sea-star-wide depth limit.

How common is sea-star habitat?

Sea-star diversity is documented at both global and regional scales. NOAA estimates approximately 2,000 sea star species in marine waters. A 2025 Natural History Museum article describes more than 200,000 starfish records used to examine distribution patterns by latitude and depth. The University of Alaska Sea Grant College Program’s 2015 Aleutian Islands field guide covers 63 nearshore subtidal sea-star species, illustrating the diversity within one region rather than representing all oceans.

What to remember when identifying a sea star’s habitat

  • Use “sea star” for scientific clarity; “starfish” is the familiar common name, but sea stars are not fish.
  • Record the species or a careful identification before assigning a range or depth.
  • Note whether the animal is intertidal, shallow subtidal, or deeper underwater.
  • Describe the actual bottom—rock, sand, mud, shell, kelp, eelgrass, reef, or a mixture.
  • Include local conditions such as wave exposure, currents, temperature, and salinity when explaining why it occurs there.
  • Do not assume that a sea star seen on a beach lives on land; intertidal individuals are marine animals temporarily exposed at low tide.

Further regional reference

The University of Alaska Sea Grant College Program’s Field Guide to Sea Stars of the Aleutian Islands (2015) is a regional identification resource covering 63 nearshore subtidal species. It is useful for Aleutian habitats, but it does not represent every sea star species or every ocean habitat.
