Salmon eat different foods as they grow and move between freshwater and the ocean. Young wild salmon commonly feed on insects and other small invertebrates; at sea, prey can include plankton, krill, squid, and small fish. The exact menu depends on the salmon species, life stage, location, season, and available prey.

What do salmon eat in rivers?

Newly hatched salmon, called alevins, initially draw nourishment from the yolk sac attached to them. Once they emerge from the gravel and begin feeding independently, freshwater juveniles eat small prey found in or near their stream habitat.

For Atlantic salmon, examples include mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, blackflies, and riffle beetles. They may also occasionally eat small amphibians or fish. Sockeye juveniles eat mainly zooplankton, amphipods, and insects, while coho juveniles eat plankton and insects. These are examples, not a complete menu for every river or population.

What do salmon eat in the ocean?

Marine diets vary by species. Atlantic salmon eat a range of prey, including fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, and worms. Sockeye continue to eat zooplankton and also take larval and small adult fish, with squid eaten occasionally. Coho shift toward small fish, including herring, sand lance, anchovies, and sardines; their prey can also include juvenile salmon and juvenile sablefish.

The prey listed are representative examples. A salmon’s diet can change with region, season, habitat, and prey availability, so no single list describes every salmon.

Do salmon eat while migrating to spawn?

Adult Atlantic salmon stop feeding before entering estuaries to begin their spawning migration. Their earlier ocean diet should not be taken as evidence that they continue eating throughout the return journey.

What do farmed salmon eat?

Farmed salmon are given formulated feed rather than foraging for the naturally available prey of wild salmon. NOAA says feed used in U.S. salmon farming typically contains fish meal and fish oil, along with vitamins and minerals. Plant-based ingredients are also used as alternatives to reduce reliance on fish meal and fish oil. This describes farm feed, not the diet of wild salmon.
