Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 for $16: Is It Good for Pets and Valuables?

At $16, Galaxy SmartTag2 may be a handy recovery aid for Samsung owners—but it relies on Bluetooth and nearby Galaxy devices, not live GPS.

At $16, Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag2 could be a useful low-cost backup for a Galaxy owner—but it is not a live GPS pet tracker. The Walmart listing associated with that price describes an international-version one-pack, so check the current seller, shipping, return terms and warranty before buying. The tag can help find nearby belongings or report a location when participating Galaxy devices detect it; it cannot promise continuous updates when a pet wanders out of range.

Is the $16 SmartTag2 deal worth considering?

The $16 price appeared on a Walmart listing for a one-pack described as an international version. That is a listing price, not a confirmed Samsung U.S. retail price, and it may change or disappear. The listing alone does not establish who sells and ships the unit, whether shipping or a coupon affects the final cost, or what warranty and return protection apply.

Before checkout, confirm that the item is new, a single genuine SmartTag2, and the version you intend to buy. Check the seller name, delivery charge, return window, warranty coverage, packaging and model number. For an import, also confirm that it can be registered with your regional Samsung account and SmartThings service. If those terms are unclear, the low price may not be worth the risk.

For someone with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, the hardware is appealing at that price: it has a built-in attachment hole, a replaceable coin-cell battery and IP67-rated dust and water resistance. The important trade-off is the finding network: SmartTag2 is designed for Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem, and its remote location updates depend on nearby participating Galaxy devices.

Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life (4-Pack) - Black/White (Global Edition, No US Warranty)
  • Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only

What SmartTag2 can—and cannot—do for a pet

Attach the tag securely to a collar and it may help locate a cat hiding indoors or a dog whose collar is somewhere in a populated neighborhood. It can also be useful on a carrier, leash or travel crate. If the tag is beyond your phone’s direct Bluetooth reach, its location may update when a participating Galaxy device detects it.

That is not live tracking. SmartTag2 has no standalone GPS or cellular connection, so it cannot reliably show a pet’s continuous route, send dependable escape alerts or report from an area without nearby devices. A displayed location may be the last reported location rather than where the animal is now. Walls, vehicles, terrain, nearby metal, battery condition and local Galaxy-device density can all affect discovery.

  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only.
  • Reasonable use: An inexpensive recovery aid for a pet in a home or populated area, or for locating pet gear.
  • Not a substitute: A microchip, visible collar ID, secure fencing or a purpose-built cellular GPS pet tracker when you need live location, route history or geofencing.
  • Mounting matters: Use a secure collar attachment that does not create a choking hazard or snag on branches, fencing or crate hardware. Test the tag’s sound and app behavior while it is mounted.

How finding works

When the tag is nearby

SmartThings can ask the tag to make a sound and help you search for it over Bluetooth. Range varies with surroundings; a tag may be harder to locate across floors, walls or clutter than in an open room.

When you are close and have a compatible UWB phone

Some Galaxy phones include ultra-wideband (UWB), which enables more precise nearby-finding features such as Compass View. Samsung also describes camera-assisted finding. These features require a compatible UWB-enabled Galaxy phone; they are not available on every Galaxy model. Samsung’s product overview describes the tag’s Bluetooth and UWB features.

When the tag is far away

SmartThings Find can use nearby participating Galaxy devices to report an approximate location. The tag itself is not connecting to GPS or cellular service; its remote discovery depends on the Samsung network encountering it. Samsung explains the Bluetooth and SmartThings Find approach in its SmartTag2 user guide.

Compatibility: a Galaxy phone is essential

Samsung’s U.S. product information lists Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android 9 or later as compatible. That does not mean the tag works as an owner-controlled tracker with every Android phone. Setup and registration require a Samsung account and SmartThings Find. UWB-based Compass View also requires a compatible UWB Galaxy phone; Samsung’s regional information specifies Android 11 or later for that feature on UWB-enabled Galaxy smartphones.

An iPhone user should not buy SmartTag2 expecting to manage it through the iPhone’s tracking network. A finder with an NFC-capable phone may still read the tag’s Lost Mode message, but that is different from using SmartThings Find as the owner. See Samsung’s U.S. product page for compatibility details and Samsung’s regional UWB information for the Compass View qualification.

Lost Mode Can display registered contact details to a finder using an NFC-capable phone with internet access, if Lost Mode was enabled.

Samsung describes the battery figure as “up to” 500 days and bases it on internal testing for typical usage scenarios; actual runtime varies. The Samsung newsroom explanation covers that estimate.

Useful SmartTag2 features beyond location

  • Built-in attachment hole: Attach it to keys, luggage, a backpack, a bike or a pet-collar holder without relying on a separate case.
  • Sound alert: Ask the tag to ring when searching nearby.
  • Lost Mode with NFC: If enabled and configured with contact information, a finder can tap the tag with an NFC-capable phone to see the message. The finder needs internet access for the information to load; NFC Lost Mode does not turn an iPhone into the owner’s tracking app.
  • Button functions: The physical button can trigger configured smart-home actions or phone-related functions, depending on setup and supported devices.

Samsung also describes unknown-tag alerts intended to notify Galaxy users when an unregistered SmartTag is traveling with them. Details are in its interview about SmartTag2 safety features.

Set up the tag and test it before relying on it

  1. Insert or activate the included CR2032 battery, then install or update SmartThings on a compatible Galaxy device.
  2. Sign in to your Samsung account and bring the tag close to the phone. Follow the on-screen pairing prompt to register it in SmartThings Find.
  3. Give the tag a clear name, such as “Milo’s collar” or “Black suitcase.” Allow the location and SmartThings permissions needed for finding features.
  4. Test ringing the tag and checking its nearby and last-reported locations. If your phone supports UWB, try the available nearby-finding feature.
  5. Enable Lost Mode and add contact information if you want a finder to be able to reach you through NFC.
  6. Attach it securely to the item or collar, then repeat the sound and finding tests from its actual mounting position.

If pairing or finding fails

  • Check that Bluetooth and location are enabled, keep the phone near the tag, and reseat or replace the CR2032 battery.
  • Update SmartThings and your phone software. Confirm the tag is not already registered to another Samsung account.
  • If the app offers the option, remove and re-add the device. Confirm the phone is a supported Galaxy model.
  • For an imported unit, ask the seller or Samsung whether its model can register with your regional SmartThings service.
  • If the app shows an old location, the tag may not have recently encountered a participating Galaxy device. A nearby ring can still be affected by walls, floors or other obstructions.
  • If Compass View is missing, the phone may not have UWB, may not meet the feature’s software requirements, or may not support the feature in that region.

Who should buy—and who should pass?

Consider it at $16 if

  • You have a compatible Galaxy phone and Samsung account.
  • You want a low-cost way to find everyday belongings or a pet’s collar in places where Galaxy-device discovery is plausible.
  • You value a replaceable CR2032 battery, built-in attachment hole and IP67 rating.

Pass if

  • You use an iPhone or a non-Samsung Android phone and need to manage the tag yourself.
  • You need live pet location, continuous route history, geofencing or reliable rural coverage.
  • You need a slim wallet card rather than a small, thicker tag.
  • The imported unit’s regional compatibility, warranty or return protection is unclear.
