How overfeeding can harm aquarium water
Fish produce ammonia as waste, and uneaten food adds more material as it breaks down. Food left in the tank may also cloud or foul the water. How quickly a problem develops depends on the amount of excess food and the tank’s condition, so a single leftover flake is not a reliable measure of danger.
How much should you feed your fish?
There is no reliable portion or schedule that suits every aquarium fish. Needs vary with species, life stage, food type, and conditions. Young fish, for example, may need smaller, more frequent meals than adults. Start with a small portion of food appropriate for the fish, then observe their response. What to do if you find leftover food or suspect ammonia
If there is uneaten food
Remove it promptly and avoid adding more until you have considered whether the next portion should be smaller. Do not treat every extra bite as a reason to fast the fish; feeding advice depends on species and life stage.
If you are concerned about ammonia
Do not use smell to check: ammonia is colorless and odorless even at levels toxic to fish, according to UF/IFAS ammonia guidance. Test the water with a suitable aquarium water test kit; a test can establish whether ammonia is present, but it does not diagnose every cause of illness or poor water quality.

If a test shows ammonia, reducing or stopping feed is an initial response recommended by UF/IFAS. Its guidance says a short pause of one to three days will not typically harm fish except fry; this applies to a system with ammonia present, not as a routine response to any extra food.
