Their spawning months vary by species and location, and some—such as salmon—spend part of their lives in the ocean before returning to freshwater to reproduce.
Which freshwater fish spawn in fall?
These are North American examples, not a complete worldwide list. The reported months are best read as regional ranges, not universal dates.
| Fish | Reported spawning period | Where and how it spawns |
|---|---|---|
| Brook trout | September–October | Gravel in streams or lakes; females dig and cover gravel nests called redds. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service |
| Lake trout | Normally October–November in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service account; August–November in the Fisheries and Oceans Canada account | Rocky lake bottoms, including boulder or rubble areas. The two agencies report different ranges, so neither should be treated as a single schedule for every population. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; Fisheries and Oceans Canada |
| Sockeye salmon | Typically summer or fall | Freshwater streams or lakes; they dig gravel redds and cover their eggs. NOAA Fisheries |
| Atlantic salmon | October–November in NOAA’s Gulf of Maine account | Adults return from the ocean to their natal freshwater rivers and lay eggs in gravel redds. NOAA Fisheries |
| Dolly Varden | September–November | Gravel beds in small headwater streams or, sometimes, larger rivers. Alaska Department of Fish and Game |
| Arctic Cisco | Late September or early October | This timing is reported for the Mackenzie River system, not as a range for every population. BC Conservation Data Centre |
| Atlantic sturgeon | Late summer and fall in some rivers from Georgia to Chesapeake Bay; spring and early summer in rivers from Delaware to Canada | Spawning season varies substantially by river and population; calling the species simply a fall spawner would be misleading. NOAA Fisheries |
Why fall spawning dates differ
“Fall” is a broad seasonal label, not a fixed month range shared by all fish. Species, population, latitude, and local water conditions affect when spawning occurs. The lake trout accounts illustrate why location and source matter: the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service gives a normal October–November period, while Fisheries and Oceans Canada gives August–November.
Atlantic sturgeon provide an even sharper example of geographic variation. NOAA reports late-summer or fall spawning in some southern rivers, but spring and early-summer spawning farther north. The season for a named species therefore cannot always be summarized with one date range.

Freshwater spawning does not always mean a freshwater life cycle
Sockeye and Atlantic salmon are anadromous: they hatch and spawn in freshwater, but most spend part of their lives at sea. Sockeye typically return from the ocean to freshwater spawning grounds; Atlantic salmon return to their natal rivers. Their adult return and freshwater reproduction are what make them relevant to a question about freshwater spawning.
How spawning habitat differs
Many fall-spawning fish use gravel, but their habitats are not interchangeable. Brook trout use gravel in streams or lakes; sockeye and Atlantic salmon create gravel redds in freshwater; Dolly Varden use gravel beds in streams. Lake trout instead spawn over rocky lake bottoms, including boulder and rubble areas.

A familiar counterexample: largemouth bass
Not every familiar freshwater fish spawns in fall. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes largemouth bass as spring spawners, when water warms to 59–75°F. That temperature range is a spring-spawning detail for largemouth bass, not a fall-spawning threshold for the fish listed above. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
