Some fish can see very well in dim light, but fish do not share one universal night-vision ability. Rod-rich retinas and reflective structures such as a tapetum lucidum can increase sensitivity when little light is available. In complete darkness, however, vision cannot work without light; some species rely on other senses instead.
What “night vision” means for fish
“Night vision” usually means seeing under very low-light conditions, such as at night, in deep water, or in murky habitat. It should not be confused with seeing when no light exists at all. Fish eyesight differs substantially by species because each retina is adapted to the animal’s habitat and the light available there.
A fish living in a dim deep-sea zone may have very different visual equipment from one living in a sunlit reef or a turbid river. The evidence does not establish one minimum light level at which all fish stop seeing, so a single night-vision threshold would be misleading.
How fish eyes improve sensitivity in low light
Rods detect scarce light
Rod photoreceptors are specialized for sensitivity rather than color-rich, bright-light vision. A retina with many rods can capture more of the few photons available at dusk, at night, or in deep water. Some deep-sea lanternfishes have pure-rod retinas, unusually high rod density, and visual pigments tuned to the blue-green light that reaches the mesopelagic zone.

One lanternfish species, Myctophum brachygnathum, has been reported with approximately 200–600 rods per ganglion cell. That is a species-specific figure from a comparative review, not a general ratio for fish.
A tapetum can give light a second chance
Some fish have a reflective retinal layer called a tapetum lucidum. Light that passes through the photoreceptors can be reflected back through them, creating another opportunity for detection and potentially improving sensitivity in dim conditions. In teleost research, the tapetum was found in fish from turbid inshore waters and rivers of South Texas. Arnott, Maciolek, and Nicol reported the structure in seven teleost families and wrote that the correlation with highly turbid habitat “indicates a role in dim-light vision.”

Tapeta are not present in every fish, and their form and retinal location vary. A reflective eye therefore indicates a possible adaptation to limited light, not a universal fish trait or proof that an individual fish can see in total darkness.
Examples of species adapted to different light environments
| Fish context | Visual features described in the literature | What this shows |
|---|---|---|
| Turbid South Texas inshore waters and rivers | A retinal tapetum was reported in seven teleost families. | Reflective structures can occur in habitats where suspended sediment reduces available light. |
| Deep-sea lanternfishes | Some species have pure-rod retinas, high rod density, and pigments suited to blue-green mesopelagic light. | Lanternfish vision is specialized by species and depth; one species’ adaptation should not be generalized to all fish. |
| African weakly electric elephantnose fish (Gnathonemus petersii) | The retina is described as having hundreds of rods and tens of cones in bundles, with a tapetum lucidum. | This fish combines low-light visual adaptations with a nonvisual system for detecting objects when light is absent. |
Can fish see in complete darkness?
No eye can form a visual image without light. A fish may remain able to locate objects in total darkness, but that does not necessarily mean it is seeing them.

Elephantnose fish use electrolocation
Gnathonemus petersii, the African weakly electric elephantnose fish, produces and senses weak electrical signals. Changes in the surrounding electrical field can reveal nearby objects, helping the fish detect and distinguish them even when there is no usable light. A 2008 review states: “These animals can detect and distinguish objects through active electrolocation in complete darkness.” This is evidence of nonvisual sensing, not a claim that the fish’s eyes see in darkness.
Its rods, cones, and tapetum help explain how it can function visually in low light, while electrolocation supplies information when visual input is unavailable.

Does eyeshine prove that a fish has night vision?
Not by itself. Eyeshine occurs when light reflects from a tapetum or another reflective eye structure, but tapeta are documented only in some fish and differ among species. A visible eye reflection can suggest that incoming light is being redirected through the retina; it cannot establish how well that fish sees at night, nor whether it can see with no light.
Conversely, the absence of obvious eyeshine does not by itself prove that a fish cannot see in dim conditions. Night vision depends on the complete visual system, including rods, photoreceptor arrangement, pigments, and the habitat’s available light.

What this means for the phrase “fish can see at night”
- In dim natural light: many species may see, with sensitivity determined by their retinal adaptations and ecology.
- In very murky water: some fish have reflective retinal structures associated with making better use of limited light.
- In the deep sea: certain lanternfishes show extreme rod-based specialization for the narrow light spectrum available there.
- In total darkness: eyes cannot provide ordinary vision, but species such as elephantnose fish can use electrolocation and potentially other nonvisual cues.
Thus, “fish have night vision” is a useful shorthand only if it means that some fish are adapted to low-light conditions. It is inaccurate if it implies that every fish sees equally well at night or that fish can see without light.
