There is no single best salt mix for every saltwater aquarium. Choose the formulation whose calcium, magnesium and alkalinity targets match your fish-only, community or reef system, then verify the freshly mixed water with reliable tests. Instant Ocean Sea Salt is a standard natural-seawater-style option; Reef Crystals is an enriched reef formulation; and Tropic Marin Classic, Pro-Reef and Bio-Actif are intended for different parameter goals and tank styles. These are manufacturer descriptions, not proof that one brand produces better livestock outcomes.
How to choose a marine salt mix
- Define the aquarium. Fish-only and community systems generally do not need the same alkalinity or elevated major-element targets as a demanding coral reef. Carbon-dosed ultra-low-nutrient systems are a specialized case.
- Set target parameters before comparing brands. Decide the salinity, alkalinity, calcium and magnesium ranges you intend to maintain. Compare products only at the same salinity and with the same water quality; otherwise the numbers are not equivalent.
- Check the prepared water yourself. Manufacturer figures are guides. Measure salinity (specific gravity or PSU) and, when relevant, alkalinity, calcium and magnesium after mixing. Ongoing dosing and water changes remain specific to the aquarium’s consumption.
- Compare usable cost locally. A current price per bucket or bag is meaningful only after accounting for how many gallons it makes at your target salinity. Current regional prices and stock vary, so no universal cost winner can be established here.
Salt mixes compared
| Product | Manufacturer information | Most logical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Instant Ocean Sea Salt | In purified water at specific gravity 1.026, the maker lists 400 mg/L calcium and 1320 mg/L magnesium as natural-seawater levels. Its product page recommends specific gravity 1.020–1.024 at 77°F. | A standard marine mix for fish-only or general systems; follow the package salinity direction rather than mixing the two stated contexts. |
| Reef Crystals | Described by Instant Ocean as a reef formulation enriched with essential ocean-reef elements relative to natural seawater; recommended specific gravity is 1.020–1.026 at 77°F. | Reef keepers who specifically want the maker’s enriched formulation. It is not evidence of guaranteed faster coral growth or superior performance. |
| Tropic Marin Classic | At 35 PSU (approximately specific gravity 1.0264): calcium 370–390 ppm, magnesium 1250–1300 ppm and alkalinity 9–10 dKH. | Tropic Marin USA positions it for community reefs or fish-only tanks without special requirements and a preference for higher alkalinity. |
| Tropic Marin Pro-Reef | At 35 PSU: calcium 430–450 ppm, magnesium 1300–1350 ppm and alkalinity 7–8 dKH. | Reef systems seeking the maker’s lower 6–8 dKH-style alkalinity range and higher calcium profile; actual supplementation depends on tank demand. |
| Tropic Marin Bio-Actif | At 35 PSU: calcium 430–450 ppm, magnesium 1300–1350 ppm and alkalinity 8–9 dKH. | A specialized choice for carbon-dosed, ultra-low-nutrient systems according to Tropic Marin’s FAQ, not a default for every aquarium. |
See Tropic Marin’s parameter ranges and tank guidance in its USA FAQ. The figures above are manufacturer guidelines, not independent laboratory verification.
Why salinity makes the numbers easy to misread
Salt concentration changes every reported parameter. Tropic Marin’s approximate values are measured at 35 PSU, equivalent to specific gravity 1.0264. Instant Ocean’s calcium and magnesium figures are stated at specific gravity 1.026 in purified water, while its product page gives a recommended 1.020–1.024 range. A direct comparison is valid only when salinity, temperature and source water are comparable.
Mixing salt safely
Follow the chosen product’s directions
Do not assume one brand’s procedure applies to another. Both Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals instruct users not to mix salt in an aquarium containing animals and to adjust specific gravity before use.

#1 Best Overall
- FORMULATED SPECIFICALLY FOR MARINE AQUARIUMS: Contains every major, minor and trace element delicate marine fish and invertebrates need.
- DISSOLVES FAST: Superior solubility – provides a clear, ready-to-use solution in minutes.
- IDEAL pH: Quickly achieves and maintains ideal pH – free of nitrate and phosphate.
- CONVENIENT: No special additives are needed – will not separate during packaging and shipping.
- INSTANT OCEAN SEA SALT: The industry standard for quality, consistency and value for more than 40 years.
Instant Ocean procedure
- Add salt to water—never water to salt.
- Measure and adjust specific gravity to the system’s target.
- Circulate the new mix for at least overnight before use, following the Sea Salt FAQ.
Tropic Marin procedure
- Bring RO/DI water to the intended aquarium temperature and circulate it.
- Add almost all the salt gradually to the full circulating volume.
- Measure specific gravity near the end, then continue circulating until the salt is fully dissolved and the water is clear.
- Avoid making a concentrated salt solution, which Tropic Marin cautions can cause calcium-carbonate precipitation. Full details are in the Tropic Marin FAQ.
What testing can—and cannot—tell you
- Salinity testing confirms that the new water matches the tank’s intended concentration.
- Alkalinity, calcium and magnesium tests reveal whether the prepared water is near the product’s stated profile and help detect mixing or measurement errors.
- Chemical values alone do not prove biological performance. A 2022 Reef2Reef evaluation described its comparison as informal and customized to a public-aquarium application, and warned that anecdotes cannot isolate salt mix as the cause of aquarium success or failure. Read the discussion at Reef2Reef’s 2022 sea-salt testing update.
A practical decision guide
Fish-only or uncomplicated community tank
Start with a standard mix such as Instant Ocean Sea Salt, or Tropic Marin Classic if its 9–10 dKH profile matches your plan. Confirm the actual salinity after mixing.
Reef tank with a lower-alkalinity target
Consider Tropic Marin Pro-Reef when its stated 7–8 dKH and 430–450 ppm calcium ranges align with your maintenance strategy. Corals’ consumption still determines dosing and water-change needs.

- Contains one (1) API AQUARIUM SALT Freshwater Aquarium Salt 36-Ounce Box
Carbon-dosed ultra-low-nutrient system
Bio-Actif is the specialized option Tropic Marin associates with this approach. Use it only when the rest of the system is managed for that method.
Unsure of the target
Do not pick by brand reputation alone. Establish a salinity and alkalinity plan, choose the closest formulation, mix a small batch, and test it before a water change.

Bottom line
The best salt is the one that reliably mixes to your aquarium’s target salinity and major-element ranges with minimal adjustment. Match the formulation to the tank, compare values at equal salinity, follow that product’s mixing instructions, and verify the batch before it reaches your animals. No current evidence establishes a universally superior brand.
