Is Cod a Deep-Sea Fish? Atlantic and Pacific Cod Depths Explained

Cod is usually described as a bottom-associated fish rather than simply a deep-sea fish. Atlantic cod live around 30–500 feet, while Pacific cod shift seasonally between shallower and deeper shelf habitats.

Usually, no. Atlantic and Pacific cod are bottom-associated (demersal) fish, but “deep-sea” is a separate depth classification. Atlantic cod commonly occupy about 30–500 feet, while Pacific cod move seasonally between roughly 300 feet or less and 300 to more than 800 feet.

What “deep-sea” means for cod

Demersal describes where a fish lives in relation to the seafloor; it does not automatically mean deep-sea. The boundary for “deep-sea fish” varies by convention. A 2004 FAO overview, reporting an ICES Deepwater Fisheries Working Group convention, uses about 400–500 meters as an upper-depth limit. FAO also notes that an unequivocal definition is difficult: FAO, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2004.

That means the answer depends on the cod species, its season and life stage, and the depth definition being applied.

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

NOAA describes Atlantic cod as living near the ocean floor along rocky slopes and ledges. They prefer cold water at approximately 30–500 feet, generally over coarse sediments, and spawn near the bottom from winter into early spring. See NOAA Fisheries’ Atlantic Cod profile.

This is clearly bottom-associated habitat, but the usual range is far shallower than the 400–500-meter convention (about 1,312–1,640 feet) used in the FAO account. Atlantic cod therefore should not be labeled simply as a deep-sea fish.

Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus)

Pacific cod use deeper habitat in winter and shallower habitat in summer:

Species and situation Depth reported by NOAA What it describes
Pacific cod, winter 300 to more than 800 feet Continental shelf edge and upper continental slope
Pacific cod, summer 300 feet or less Seasonal shallower habitat
Pacific cod spawning, January–May 330–820 feet Spawning depth range

NOAA says adults live near the ocean floor, while larvae and small juveniles occur throughout the water column. The seasonal habitat information is in NOAA’s Pacific Cod profile; NOAA’s spawning range is also reported on that species page.

Some Pacific cod winter and spawning depths overlap or approach the 400–500-meter convention, but the species is not uniformly deep-sea: it also occupies water 300 feet or shallower in summer.

How deep do cod generally live?

A general FAO account characterizes cod as typically bottom-living, often in the bottom few fathoms, at depths from 10–250 fathoms. It also notes that cod can occur anywhere from the surface to the bottom while pursuing food. Because that account is broad and older, the species-specific NOAA ranges above are the better guide for Atlantic and Pacific cod. See FAO’s overview of cod.

Why a simple yes-or-no answer can mislead

  • “Cod” is ambiguous: Atlantic cod and Pacific cod are different species with different depth patterns.
  • Bottom-associated is not the same as deep-sea: a fish can stay close to the seafloor on a relatively shallow shelf.
  • Depth changes with season and life stage: Pacific cod move between deeper winter habitat and shallower summer habitat, while young fish may occupy the whole water column.
  • Common names can confuse: morid cods and other fish called “cod” are not the same as Atlantic or Pacific cod in the genus Gadus.

Bottom line for pet owners

Cod is best described as a cold-water, bottom-associated fish, not automatically as a deep-sea fish. Atlantic cod usually live around 30–500 feet. Pacific cod can range from 300 feet or less in summer to 300–more than 800 feet in winter, with spawning at 330–820 feet. Whether a particular cod qualifies as “deep-sea” requires naming the species and stating the depth convention.
