For a gravity-fed aquarium, the best match is a mechanically adjustable float valve. It opens as evaporation lowers the water level and closes when the float rises, with no electricity or controller. Use one with an elevated reservoir or a compatible pressurized RO/DI line, after confirming the tubing or thread size, mounting clearance, and freshwater or saltwater suitability. Limit the water source or add an independent high-level cutoff: a stuck-open valve can still overfill an aquarium.
If the reservoir is below the tank, you need a pump, or you want sensor redundancy and alarms, choose a complete electronic automatic top-off (ATO) instead. TUNZE’s Osmolator 3 is the most fully documented premium alternative in the available product information.
What an aquarium float valve does
A float valve uses buoyancy to control an inlet. As evaporation lowers the aquarium or sump level, the float drops and opens the valve. Once the water reaches the set height, the float rises and closes it. The process is mechanical, so there is no sensor, controller, or pump to power.
This design suits freshwater tanks and reef systems supplied by an elevated reservoir. It can also work on a pressurized RO/DI product-water line, but the valve controls only the product-water inlet. It does not automatically stop an RO unit’s waste line. An RO installation needs its own appropriate auto-shutoff arrangement; verify the behavior of your exact membrane, pressure, and plumbing before connecting a direct line.

Choose by how water reaches the aquarium
Elevated reservoir or gravity feed
A mechanical valve is usually the simplest choice when the reservoir sits above the tank and can provide reliable head pressure. There is no pump noise or electrical failure mode. Use a reservoir whose total volume cannot exceed the free capacity of the sump or aquarium.
Pressurized RO/DI line
A float valve can close the product-water line when the level is reached, but the RO system must also shut its waste flow correctly when pressure rises. Confirm the valve’s pressure and fitting specifications and install the RO manufacturer’s required auto-shutoff components rather than assuming any float valve provides them.

- 【WIDE APPLICATION】The aquarium water adding device can be used to replenish fresh water in fish tanks and improve fish living environment, creating a great deal of bubbles that your fish loves. The fish tank water changer features fully automatic start and stopping, no electricity is needed.
- 【VARIOUS INSTALLATION】The ATO system is easy to hang on to your aquarium sump. The unique double hanging device can be directly hung on aquariums or fish tanks. The updated water level adjustment device, which enjoys a larger rotation range, replaces the original bracket adjustment, and the aquarium water changer can be applied to water level range from 0.5 to 15 cm.
- 【FLOAT VALVE】The unique float valve: the adjustment shaft adopts engineering plastic instead of metal screw, and you don’t need to worry about corrosion. You can adjust the ideal angle by hands and no extra tool. Furthermore, the multi-purpose bracket can fix water replenisher firmly. The water level controller can work with water purifier and normal water bucket, a superior supply for both fish tanks and aquarium.
- 【EASY STORAGE】The aquarium water changer abandoned the crude benzene hose, and the aquarium water replenisher can be connected to 8 meters 20Ft white cube, weighs 200 grams, which is easier for adding water and storage. Floating ball is small in volume and will not occupy the space in the fish tank.
Pump-fed reservoir below the tank
Use an electronic ATO when water must be lifted from a lower container. The controller starts a pump when the level falls and stops it at the target height. This arrangement can add timed dosing limits, alarms, and independent sensors that a single mechanical valve does not provide.
Mechanical float valve versus electronic ATO
| Consideration | Mechanical float valve | Electronic ATO |
|---|---|---|
| Supply geometry | Gravity reservoir or suitable pressurized product-water line | Pump-fed reservoir, including reservoirs below the aquarium |
| Failure protection | One mechanical shutoff unless you add a separate high-level backup | Can combine dual floats or optical sensing, timed pump cutoff, alarms, and a physical backup |
| Water compatibility | Check freshwater, saltwater, or brackish rating and resistance to deposits or salt creep | Check sensor materials, pump suitability, and cleaning requirements for the water used |
| Installation | Requires correct bulkhead or side-mount dimensions, tubing or thread standard, glass thickness, and clearance | Requires sensor placement, cable routing, pump plumbing, and a controller location |
| Level control and service | Adjustable set point; clean the valve, float, and inlet when mineral deposits or debris appear | Optical or float sensors can hold a tighter level but need cleaning and replacement parts |
| Power and noise | No electricity and normally silent | Needs power; pump operation and alarms add noise and wiring |

This 9–12 V DC accessory valve can replace the Osmolator metering pump for gravity-line applications and is specified by TUNZE as compatible with the 8555.000 RO water controller. It is an accessory component, not a complete stand-alone ATO, so the controller and safety design still matter.
How to size and install a mechanical valve
- Measure the mounting location. Record glass thickness, available freeboard, chamber depth, and whether the valve will mount through a bulkhead or over a side wall.
- Match the connection. Confirm inlet tubing diameter or thread standard, supplied adapters, and the pressure range for the source. Do not force a near-match fitting.
- Set the target level. Position the float where normal evaporation is replenished without allowing water to reach the rim, standpipe, or equipment openings.
- Prevent back-siphoning. Keep the outlet above the waterline when possible, or provide a reliable siphon break and route tubing so a failure cannot drain the reservoir into the aquarium.
- Test the shutoff. Raise the float by hand and verify that flow stops completely. Repeat after the valve has been installed and pressurized.
- Limit the source. Choose a reservoir no larger than the volume the sump can safely accept, or add an independent high-level cutoff that does not rely on the same float mechanism.
Safety checks that prevent an overflow
- Calculate the maximum reservoir volume the sump can accept, including water that may drain back during a pump outage.
- Inspect the float, hinge, inlet, and nearby glass for salt creep, mineral scale, algae, and debris; deposits can keep a valve from closing.
- Keep the outlet secured and above the waterline or install a tested siphon break.
- For RO/DI, verify product-line pressure, membrane auto-shutoff, and waste-line behavior with the exact RO unit.
- Add a physically independent high-level switch or cutoff where an overflow would threaten property, livestock, or electrical equipment.
- Remember that an ATO replaces evaporated water; it does not perform a water change and cannot make an aquarium flood-proof.
How much top-off water will you need?
Open reef aquariums may evaporate roughly 1–3% of system volume per day, according to a 2026 ReefMetric guideline. That is an estimate, not a universal measurement: temperature, humidity, exposed surface area, airflow, and lighting can change the actual rate. Measure your own tank for several days before choosing reservoir capacity or a refill schedule.
