For most aquariums up to about 60 litres, the OASE FiltoSmart 60 is the best all-round external filter. It is rated for aquariums up to 60 litres, uses 5 W, and is supplied with filter media, hoses, an intake, outlet and diffuser. For an open 20–40 litre aquarium, the EHEIM aquacompact 40 is the stronger alternative because its throughput is adjustable and its pre-filter is accessible inside the tank. The Fluval 207 is a sound option only when “small” means a medium aquarium: its manufacturer rating reaches 220 litres (45 US gallons), so it is oversized for most nano tanks.
Quick recommendation
| Filter | Best fit | Manufacturer capacity and specifications | Main reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| OASE FiltoSmart 60 | Most nano and small aquariums | Up to 60 L; 300 l/h; 5 W; multi-stage mechanical-biological filtration | Compact external unit with supplied media and diffuser |
| EHEIM aquacompact 40 | Open aquariums around 20–40 L | 20–40 L small-open-aquarium range; the family also covers 30–60 L | Adjustable throughput, internal pre-filter and automatic self-priming |
| Fluval 207 | Medium tanks that only seem small by comparison | Up to 220 L (45 US gal) | Substantially greater capacity than a nano tank normally requires |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent tests. Actual flow can be lower after media loading, tubing, head height, debris buildup or overdue cleaning.
Why the OASE FiltoSmart 60 is the best default
OASE describes the FiltoSmart 60 as an external filter for aquariums up to 60 litres. Its stated 300 l/h flow and 5 W consumption suit the scale of a small aquarium without the capacity mismatch of a much larger canister. The unit provides multi-stage mechanical and biological filtration and is supplied with the media and connection hardware needed for installation.
What makes it practical on a nano stand
- Its compact design can be placed beside or behind the aquarium.
- The included diffuser gives you a way to spread the return flow rather than sending a narrow jet across the tank.
- Mechanical and biological stages are included, so you do not have to design a media stack from scratch.
- The 5 W figure is the manufacturer’s listed electrical consumption; it is not a measurement of total running cost in a particular country.
Choose it when your filled aquarium is within the 60-litre rating and you want a conventional external canister with a small footprint. Match the rating to actual water volume and stocking rather than treating “up to 60 litres” as a target you must fill.

When the EHEIM aquacompact 40 is a better choice
EHEIM positions the aquacompact for small open aquariums, including a 20–40 litre range; the product family also lists a 30–60 litre range. Unlike a fully external arrangement, its pump, intake and pre-filter remain inside the aquarium while the canister sits outside.
Features that matter in an open nano aquarium
- Adjustable throughput: EHEIM documents flow adjustment, useful when livestock needs gentler circulation.
- Accessible pre-filter: The removable pre-filter can capture debris before it reaches the external canister.
- Automatic self-priming: The manufacturer lists self-priming, simplifying initial start-up.
- Supplied media: Coarse and fine pads plus SUBSTRAT are included according to EHEIM’s product information.
The aquacompact 40 is the more targeted pick if your aquarium is open, falls near 20–40 litres, or contains shrimp, a betta or other animals for which controllable circulation is important. Its internal components occupy aquarium space, so check your layout before buying.

Why the Fluval 207 is usually too large for a nano tank
Fluval rates the 207 for aquariums up to 220 litres (45 US gallons). That rating makes it a candidate for a medium aquarium, not a typical 20–60 litre nano setup. A larger rated capacity does not automatically make a filter better: it can be a poor physical and flow match for a small aquarium, especially when the livestock prefers calm water.
Consider the 207 when your aquarium is genuinely much larger than the nano range or when you are planning an upgrade. For a small tank, choose a model whose capacity and flow-management options correspond to the water volume you are actually filtering.

How to choose between the FiltoSmart 60 and aquacompact 40
1. Confirm the real water volume
Use the aquarium’s filled volume, not just its advertised dimensions. Substrate, decorations and a lower operating water line reduce the water being filtered. A filter’s “up to” rating is a manufacturer limit, not a promise that every stocking level will receive identical performance.
2. Decide whether the aquarium is open
The aquacompact range is specifically designed for small open aquariums. The FiltoSmart 60 is the simpler default when you want the filtration hardware outside and a compact canister beside or behind the tank.

3. Prioritize flow control for sensitive livestock
Shrimp and bettas can struggle with a strong, concentrated return even when the filter’s total capacity is appropriate. The aquacompact offers adjustable throughput. The FiltoSmart 60 includes a diffuser to distribute its return. Aim the outlet along the surface or toward glass and observe whether animals can rest and feed normally.
4. Plan the maintenance access
Both choices use mechanical media that must be kept clear for consistent circulation. The aquacompact’s removable pre-filter can intercept debris inside the aquarium; the FiltoSmart 60 uses its supplied multi-stage media in the external unit. Leave enough room to disconnect hoses and remove the canister or pre-filter without disturbing the aquarium.

External-filter setup checklist for a small aquarium
- Place the canister on a stable surface beside or behind the aquarium, with hose runs as short and smooth as practical.
- Install the intake and outlet exactly as the manufacturer’s instructions specify; check every connection before powering the pump.
- Fit the supplied mechanical and biological media rather than packing the chamber so tightly that water bypasses it.
- Start the filter with the aquarium filled to its normal operating level and confirm that it primes and returns water continuously.
- Use the diffuser or the aquacompact’s throughput adjustment to moderate the return for low-flow livestock.
- Watch for rattling, air leaks, reduced circulation or water bypass. Switch off the unit before opening the canister for inspection.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
The filter seems too strong
First distribute the return with the FiltoSmart diffuser or reduce the aquacompact’s adjustable throughput. Repositioning the outlet toward glass or the surface can also remove a disruptive jet. Do not infer real in-tank flow solely from the manufacturer’s laboratory-style rating; media condition, tubing and lift height change the result.
Flow has dropped after installation
Check for a kinked hose, clogged intake or dirty mechanical pad. Verify that the water level is high enough for the intake and that the canister is fully primed. Clean media according to the model’s instructions rather than replacing biological media unnecessarily.
The aquarium is larger than expected
If the filled tank approaches or exceeds 60 litres, reassess the FiltoSmart 60 and aquacompact 40 ratings. The Fluval 207’s 220-litre/45-US-gallon rating is intended for a substantially larger system, so select it based on the actual aquarium and livestock plan rather than its headline capacity alone.
Verdict
Buy the OASE FiltoSmart 60 for the broadest match across nano and small aquariums up to about 60 litres. Choose the EHEIM aquacompact 40 when an open 20–40 litre aquarium, an internal pre-filter and adjustable throughput are priorities. Reserve the Fluval 207 for a genuinely medium-sized aquarium; its 220-litre rating makes it unnecessarily large for most nano tanks.
