How Often Should You Feed Koi Fish in Winter?

Koi winter feeding depends on pond-water temperature. Stop routine feeding below about 10°C (50°F), and measure the water directly rather than guessing from the weather.

Feed koi according to the pond-water temperature, not the calendar. The clearest general guidance is to stop routine feeding once the water falls below about 10°C (50°F). Above that point, the sources do not establish one winter feeding schedule that suits every pond, so do not rely on an invented weekly timetable.

How often should you feed koi in winter?

There is no single winter frequency that applies to all koi ponds. Use the water temperature to decide whether feeding is appropriate: at about 10°C (50°F) and above, the guidance reviewed does not prescribe a universal schedule; below that threshold, stop routine feeding.

Koi Organisation International’s Cold Water Koi Feeding and Nutrition says, “Generally, we stop offering Koi food when the water temperature falls below 10ºC = 50ºF.” The organization explains that koi metabolism slows in cold water and that they generally do not require or eat food below this point. Aquascape’s winter pond guidance, updated April 19, 2026, and the Royal Veterinary Center’s koi care sheet give similar stop-feeding advice.

How to use the temperature threshold

Pond-water temperature Feeding guidance What the sources establish
About 10°C (50°F) or warmer Do not assume a fixed winter frequency. Decide based on the water and the fish rather than following a calendar schedule. Koi Organisation International and the Royal Veterinary Center discuss feeding around the seasonal transition, but do not establish one exact frequency for every pond.
Below about 10°C (50°F) Stop routine feeding. Koi Organisation International’s general cold-water guidance, the Royal Veterinary Center care sheet, and Aquascape recommend stopping at approximately this threshold.
During seasonal cooling or warming Wheat-germ food is mentioned as a transition option, but it does not change the stop-feeding threshold. Koi Organisation International and the Royal Veterinary Center mention wheat-germ food for seasonal transitions or cooler water.

The sources do not provide a complete temperature-by-temperature feeding chart. In particular, they do not establish a specific number of meals per week above 10°C (50°F) that is suitable for every pond.

Measure the pond water, not the weather

Air temperature and pond-water temperature are not interchangeable. A warm afternoon does not show that the pond has warmed above the feeding threshold, just as cold air alone does not tell you precisely how cold the water is. The St. Louis Water Garden Society’s October 2025 guidance recommends tracking pond-water temperature with a thermometer.

  1. Use a pond water thermometer to measure the water directly.
  2. Base the feeding decision on that reading, not the month, a forecast, or a brief change in air temperature.
  3. When the reading is below about 10°C (50°F), stop routine feeding.

What about the advice to give a few pellets?

One Koi Organisation International article, Ken Austin’s How to feed Koi in Cold Water, describes an exception below 50°F: one or two pellets per week if koi are at the surface. That advice is more permissive than the organization’s separate general cold-water guidance, as well as the Royal Veterinary Center and Aquascape recommendations to stop feeding below about 10°C (50°F). Treat it as a limited exception from that article, not as a standard winter feeding plan; the broadly supported guidance is to stop routine feeding below the threshold.

Does wheat-germ food mean you can keep feeding in colder water?

No. Wheat-germ koi food appears in guidance for cooler water or seasonal transitions, but food type does not override the stop-feeding threshold. Do not use a switch to wheat-germ food as a reason to continue routine feeding once pond water is below about 10°C (50°F).
