Idaho’s best-supported areas for white sturgeon are two broad, free-flowing Snake River reaches: from Bliss Dam to the upper end of C.J. Strike Reservoir, and from Lewiston upstream to Hells Canyon Dam. Idaho Fish and Game identifies these as the state’s healthier remaining population areas—not as a ranked list of access points or a guarantee of catches. Smaller numbers occur below American Falls and C.J. Strike dams.

Use the current Idaho Fish and Game fishing rules and Fishing Planner to verify the exact river segment, access, boundaries, and any local exceptions before you go.

Where can you catch sturgeon in Idaho?

White sturgeon are large, long-lived fish adapted to deep, dark river pools. The agency’s population guidance supports choosing a broad reach first, then checking the precise water and access conditions.

Snake River reach What Idaho Fish and Game says How to use that information
Bliss Dam to the upper end of C.J. Strike Reservoir One of Idaho’s healthier remaining white sturgeon population areas. A principal area to investigate; the source does not rank individual banks, launches, or holes.
Lewiston upstream to Hells Canyon Dam Another healthier remaining population area in free-flowing Snake River. A principal area to investigate. The Salmon River mouth-to-Hells Canyon Dam section overlaps regional boundaries, so verify the exact location and rules in the planner.
Below American Falls and C.J. Strike dams Smaller numbers of sturgeon occur there. Secondary context, not equivalent evidence of a top destination.

There is no official comparison here of catch rates, shore access, launch quality, boat requirements, flow, or seasonal success. Treat “best spots” as the reaches with the strongest population evidence, not a promise that one named hole will produce fish.

Open the Snake River Fishing Planner entry and the other Snake River reach entry for location, access, and facility information. Recheck river conditions and land or launch access immediately before the trip, because broad population information does not establish current site conditions.

What bait works for Snake River sturgeon?

Idaho Fish and Game lists cut bait, squid, herring, and shrimp as popular choices, generally fished on the bottom of deep holes. The agency does not publish a catch-rate ranking for those baits, so choose based on availability, freshness, and the legal conditions at your water.

What hook and sinker rig is legal in Idaho?

Idaho’s 2025–2027 rules require a barbless hook, a sliding sinker device, and lighter-test line securing the weight. The rulebook recommends at least 50-pound-test monofilament for the main line; that 50-pound figure is an agency recommendation, not a stated minimum main-line regulation. See the current booklet at Idaho Fish and Game’s fishing-rules page.

  • 【Versatile Performance – From Rivers to Offshore】Perfect for bottom fishing, bank fishing, drifting, and trolling. Target flathead catfish, channel catfish, blue catfish, salmon, steelhead, and other big game. Available in multiple lengths to match your style
  1. Main line: Use the rulebook’s recommended minimum of 50-pound-test monofilament to reduce break-offs.
  2. Sliding weight system: Run the line through a sliding swivel or other approved sliding device that secures the sinker.
  3. Weight attachment: Attach the sinker with lighter-test line so a snag can sacrifice the weight instead of the entire rig.
  4. Terminal hook: Use a barbless hook, as required.
  5. Bait placement: Fish the bait on the bottom of a deep hole while maintaining enough contact to detect a take.

These design requirements are intended to reduce lost tackle and “ghost gear.” If the rig snags, boat anglers should work back over the snag and pull from different angles. From shore, give slack, pull back repeatedly, then retrieve as much line as possible and change pulling angles. Never leave discarded line in the river or along the bank.

Can you keep a sturgeon in Idaho?

No. Under Idaho’s current 2025–2027 rules, “Sturgeon must be released immediately upon landing.” Removing one from the water or possessing it—including in a live well, on a stringer, or on a tail rope—is prohibited. Fishing for sturgeon in the Kootenai River is illegal. Regulations are location-organized, so confirm the exact reach in the current booklet before casting.

How to land and release a sturgeon safely

Plan the release before the fish reaches shore or the boat. Keep the fish in the water throughout handling and release it immediately.

  1. Use a landing setup that lets you control the fish without dragging it onto dry ground.
  2. Do not grasp the sturgeon by the gills.
  3. If it is difficult to calm, roll it belly-up in the water; Idaho Fish and Game says this can settle the fish while you remove the hook.
  4. If a hold is necessary, the rules booklet says the lower lip may be held while the fish is upside down. Keep the body supported by the water.
  5. Remove the barbless hook promptly, cut the leader if the hook cannot be removed safely, and release the fish at once.

Sturgeon can live for more than 100 years, and the rulebook notes that surviving roughly 25–65 years may be necessary to reach very large sizes. Immediate, in-water release protects a fish that may represent decades of growth.

Do you need a license to fish for sturgeon in Idaho?

People age 14 and older generally need an Idaho fishing license. Free Fishing Day is the exception, but every other fishing regulation still applies. Idaho’s 2026 Free Fishing Day was June 13; check current dates and license details through Idaho Fish and Game’s Learn to Fish information and Go Fish Idaho.

The guidance reviewed here does not state that a special sturgeon permit is required. Salmon and steelhead permits apply when those species are being targeted, so check the current rules if your trip includes them.

A practical pre-trip checklist

  • Identify the exact Snake River segment in the Fishing Planner, especially around the Salmon River mouth and Hells Canyon Dam where regional boundaries overlap.
  • Read the current 2025–2027 rules for that water and check for special local provisions.
  • Pack barbless hooks, a sliding sinker device, lighter-test weight line, and heavy main line; the agency recommends at least 50-pound-test monofilament.
  • Bring legal bottom baits such as cut bait, squid, herring, or shrimp.
  • Plan an in-water release and carry tools for quick hook removal.
  • Confirm license status, access, launches, weather, and river conditions immediately before departure.
