A queen ant’s egg output depends on her species and whether she is still founding a colony or has a mature workforce. A founding queen may lay only about a dozen eggs at first; an established queen can lay hundreds per day. Published figures for red imported fire ants range from up to 800 eggs per day in Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s account to a maximum of 1,500 per day in a University of Florida IFAS reference, so neither figure is a universal rate.
Why a queen’s egg count changes
A newly mated queen starts a colony without worker help. In the examples reported by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension for red imported fire ants and by UC Riverside for the Formica ants in its research context, a founding queen lays about a dozen eggs in her initial brood. Once workers mature, they help feed and care for the queen, and her daily egg output can rise substantially.
Colony stage matters alongside species: an initial brood is not comparable to the daily output of a queen supported by workers.

How to interpret the numbers
- Initial brood: About a dozen eggs is the cited scale for the founding queens described by Texas A&M and UC Riverside.
- Daily output: The hundreds-per-day figures refer to queens later in colony development, when workers are present.
- Maximum versus observed range: The fire-ant figures are published maxima from different institutions. The 5–119 range is an observation across three colonies of a different species, not a universal limit.
These examples show why there is no single useful number for every queen ant: both species and colony conditions affect what a reported count means.
