Three Chernobyl Dogs Were Found With Blue-Coated Fur in October 2025—Here’s What’s Known

Three dogs encountered in Chornobyl City in October 2025 had fur covered in blue substance. The suspected source was never confirmed, and the veterinary team did not attribute the color to radiation.

During an October 5–13, 2025 visit to Chornobyl City, Ukraine, the Dogs of Chernobyl veterinary team encountered three dogs whose fur appeared almost completely covered in blue substance. The team suspected the dogs had rolled in an external material, possibly near an old portable toilet, but could not confirm the source. The veterinary medical director said the dogs appeared healthy and explicitly said the color was not being attributed to radiation.

What happened to the dogs?

Dr. Jennifer Betz, veterinary medical director for the Dogs of Chernobyl program, described the incident in a post from the Clean Futures Fund account. She said the team met three blue-coated dogs during its week-long visit to Chornobyl City. The dogs were fearful, and the team was unable to catch them for an examination or cleaning.

Betz wrote that the dogs appeared to have rolled in a substance that had accumulated on their fur. An old portable toilet was in the same location, so the team suspected it might have been the source. That connection remained unconfirmed.

The report also does not establish that the dogs became blue “overnight.” It records when the team encountered them, not when the color appeared or whether anyone observed the change developing.

Is radiation responsible for the blue color?

There is no evidence in the incident account that radiation caused the visible coating. Betz stated: “We are not in any way saying that it is related to radiation in Chornobyl.”

The most direct observation is simply blue material on the dogs’ fur. The proposed mechanism is that they rolled in an external substance. The portable toilet is only a suspected source, and radiation as the explanation for the coating is unsupported by the account.

Explanation or observation What the available evidence supports
Blue substance on fur Directly reported by the veterinary team
Dogs rolled in an external substance Betz’s interpretation of what appeared to have happened
Old portable toilet as the source Suspected, not confirmed
Radiation caused the blue coating Not supported by the report

What does the genetics study show?

A PLOS ONE study published December 27, 2024 examined genetic mutation in free-breeding dogs at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and in Chornobyl City. Researchers reported no evidence of increased mutation rate or increased mutation accumulation in the studied power-plant dog population. They also found genetic differentiation between the populations, while noting that the mutation findings did not explain that difference.

That study is background, not an investigation of the three blue-coated dogs. It did not examine a blue substance, identify a coating source, or test these individual animals. Its findings therefore cannot explain the dogs’ appearance or establish that radiation can never affect animals.

Were the dogs sick?

Betz said the dogs appeared healthy when the team saw them. However, they were not captured, so there was no source-confirmed identification of the material, toxicology result, or veterinary examination of these individual dogs. The available account also does not confirm whether the dogs later recovered or how quickly the coating disappeared.

How does the Dogs of Chernobyl program help animals?

Clean Futures Fund says its Dogs of Chernobyl program began in 2017 to reduce suffering among stray dogs through sterilization, vaccination, veterinary treatment, feeding and population monitoring. The organization describes many of the animals as descendants of pets left behind after the 1986 disaster and evacuation.

The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant has reported cooperation with Clean Futures Fund teams, including a medical-care and population-assessment visit in April 2024. A plant report published in April 2026 described continuing cooperation and broader animal and community support work.

What should people do if they see a blue-coated stray?

  • Do not approach, chase, capture or wash the animal.
  • Do not apply shampoo, solvents, disinfectants, dye removers or medication.
  • Keep children and pets away from the animal and any nearby unknown substance.
  • Report the location to local animal-welfare, veterinary or site authorities, providing photographs only from a safe distance.

Because the dogs in this report were fearful and could not be caught, attempting to handle a similar animal could cause injury or drive it into a more dangerous area. Only trained responders with appropriate equipment should investigate or decontaminate an unknown substance.
