Chadititan calvoi was a plant-eating titanosaur that lived in what is now northern Patagonia, Argentina, about 78 million years ago. A 2025 National Geographic Society release estimates it was about 7 meters (23 feet) long and describes it as relatively small and slender compared with other titanosaurs—so “gentle giant” is a catchy label, not a claim that it was among the largest dinosaurs.
What was Chadititan?
Chadititan calvoi is a newly identified species of titanosaur, a group of long-necked, plant-eating sauropod dinosaurs. The National Geographic Society’s March 5, 2025 release classifies it within the rinconsaurian group. Its name refers to the fossil locality, and the species name honors paleontologist Jorge Calvo, according to the release.
The release says the species was described in Revista del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales. It does not provide the paper’s title, DOI, specimen inventory or dating methods, so those details cannot be specified here.
How large was this “gentle giant”?
The National Geographic Society release gives an estimated length of about 7 meters (23 feet). It characterizes Chadititan as small and slender relative to other titanosaurs, with elongated vertebrae and delicate limb bones that distinguish it from its relatives.

The nickname “gentle giant” should therefore be read in context: Chadititan was a substantial animal compared with familiar modern creatures, but it was not presented as an especially enormous titanosaur. The available release provides an estimated length, not a measured weight.
Where and when did it live?
Fossils came from the Anacleto Formation in northern Patagonia, Argentina. The release places the fossil-bearing ecosystem at roughly 78 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous. That figure describes the reported age of the context; the release does not explain how the age was determined.

What lived alongside Chadititan?
The fossil collection from the site includes fish, turtles, crocodile relatives, dinosaurs, land snails and clams. The release describes the setting as a small pond surrounded by sand dunes and palm trees in an otherwise arid environment—a local wetland amid dry terrain.
Freshwater turtles dominate the reported collection
First author Federico Agnolin said that freshwater turtles made up more than 90% of the recovered fossils. That figure refers to this studied collection, not to all animals in Patagonia or to the ecosystem’s population proportions. The release describes the abundance as unusual compared with coeval North American and European sites, but does not give the methods or exact comparisons needed to assess that contrast in more detail.

Why the associated fossils matter
Finding several kinds of animals and mollusks in the same fossil-bearing context helps outline the habitat around the pond, rather than providing only a picture of the dinosaur. Diego Pol, identified in the release as an Explorer and paleontologist, said: “In addition to Chadititan, the fossils we identified of mollusks, fish, and turtles, enriches our understanding of this ancient ecosystem and expands our knowledge of life in Patagonia near the end of the dinosaur era.”
