The Day Scientists Sent Cats to Defy Gravity—And What They Discovered

A 1950s parabolic-flight experiment examined cats’ righting reflex without normal gravity cues, while Félicette’s 1963 rocket flight made her the first cat in space. Here is how flexible bodies and angular momentum explain the difference.

Scientists did send cats into unusual flight environments, but two different experiments are often blended into one story. In a 1950s U.S. Air Force parabolic-flight test, a cat was briefly placed in weightlessness to see whether its righting reflex still worked without the usual gravitational cue. In 1963, a cat named Félicette actually crossed into space on a French sounding rocket. Neither event broke physics: the first exposed how a cat reorients its flexible body, while the second tested an animal’s survival through a suborbital flight.

The falling-cat puzzle began with photographs

The scientific mystery became famous in October 1894, when physiologist Étienne-Jules Marey presented sequential photographs of a falling cat to the French Academy of Sciences. The images showed the cat beginning to turn after the fall had started, apparently without pushing against a surface.

That appearance created a physics problem. If the cat starts with no overall angular momentum, how can it finish upright? The answer is that the cat does not rotate as one rigid object. It changes the shape and rotational inertia of different parts of its body, allowing its orientation to change while total angular momentum remains conserved.

What the Air Force experiment actually tested

An archival Air University account from 1958 describes a cat held upside down during parabolic flight. The purpose was to test the labyrinthine, or inner-ear, righting reflex when ordinary gravitational information disappeared. When the resultant of gravity and the aircraft’s inertial acceleration was zero, the cat’s otoliths—gravity-sensing organs in the inner ear—were not stimulated.

“Defy gravity” is therefore a headline shorthand. The aircraft did not cancel the laws of motion; it removed the acceleration cue that normally tells the cat which way is down.

How a parabolic flight makes weightlessness

NASA explains that the aircraft climbs steeply, pushes over, and enters controlled free fall. The aircraft and everyone inside fall at nearly the same rate, so there is no normal force pressing passengers against the cabin floor. That produces the same weightless condition, for a short time, that astronauts experience in space.

Each reduced-gravity phase lasts about 20 seconds, according to NASA. A typical mission may fly 15 to 30 parabolas, with the aircraft pulling out of the dive between them. The cat therefore experienced repeated brief intervals rather than a sustained spaceflight.

How a cat turns over without pushing off

A cat’s righting reflex combines sensory detection with a remarkably deformable skeleton. The cat first determines its orientation, then bends its spine and rotates its front and rear body sections in opposite directions. Because those sections can change shape independently, the cat can alter its attitude without acquiring forbidden net angular momentum.

Changing rotational inertia

The forelegs and hind legs are tucked and extended at different stages. Tucking makes a section easier to rotate; extending it increases its rotational inertia and slows that section’s rotation. By coordinating those changes, the cat can rotate one part, reconfigure its body, and rotate again in a way that leaves total angular momentum unchanged while the whole animal ends up upright.

The tail is helpful, not essential

A tail can contribute to the maneuver, but it is not required. Manx cats, which lack a normal tail, can also right themselves. The essential equipment is the cat’s flexible spine, independently controllable body segments, limbs, and sensory system.

As physicist Greg Gbur put it in a discussion of the phenomenon, cats “have just evolved to exploit its deepest nuances—even when the circumstances seem impossible to survive.” UC Davis veterinary surgeon Barbro Filliquist describes the practical anatomical reason: “The cat skeleton is incredibly flexible.”

What happens when the cat is upside down in weightlessness?

Removing the gravitational cue does not automatically erase every part of the response. The cat can still sense body orientation through its vestibular system and other bodily signals, but the Air Force test was designed to determine what happens when the otoliths are no longer stimulated by a net acceleration. The result is best understood as a physiology experiment: it separated the reflex’s sensory inputs from the mechanical movements that follow.

The cat’s movement remains an internal rearrangement of mass. It does not need to touch a wall, push against the aircraft, or violate conservation of angular momentum. In ordinary falling conditions, the same mechanism lets a cat rotate toward a feet-down posture before landing, provided it has enough time and room.

Félicette: the cat that really went to space

Félicette’s flight was a separate event, not the parabolic-reflex experiment. On October 18, 1963, French scientists launched her aboard Veronique AGI sounding rocket No. 47. NASA’s historical timeline identifies this as the first cat in space. The capsule completed a suborbital trajectory and Félicette was recovered after parachute descent.

The mission’s purpose was animal spaceflight and biological survivability during a rocket launch and brief trip above the atmosphere. It did not constitute the Air Force’s controlled test of a cat’s righting reflex. A second feline launch on October 24 encountered problems that prevented recovery.

Why cats cannot simply “land on their feet” in space

On Earth, a fall supplies time and a clear direction of gravity, and a cat’s reflex aims its feet toward the ground. In orbit or a prolonged free-fall environment, there is no nearby ground toward which “down” is defined. A cat can still change its orientation relative to the spacecraft by bending and rotating its body, but that does not guarantee a feet-first landing. Without a surface or a planned landing direction, the reflex has no earthly endpoint to target.

What the experiments changed about our understanding

The falling-cat problem showed that conservation laws do not prevent an animal from reorienting itself; they constrain how it must do so. Marey’s photographs posed the paradox, the Air Force flight removed the ordinary acceleration cue so researchers could probe the reflex, and modern explanations connect the behavior to flexible-body mechanics.

For a focused treatment of the mathematics and history, Greg Gbur’s Falling Felines and Fundamental Physics is a book-length exploration of this exact problem. Check the current edition and availability when buying, since listings can change.

Key dates

  • 1894: Étienne-Jules Marey presents sequential falling-cat photographs to the French Academy of Sciences.
  • 1958: An Air University archival account records U.S. Air Force parabolic-flight work on the cat righting reflex.
  • October 18, 1963: Félicette launches on Veronique AGI No. 47 and is recovered by parachute.
  • September 13, 2022: Katherine J. Wu’s Atlantic article reviews the mechanism and discusses Greg Gbur’s book.

The bottom line

The cat did not defeat gravity. Researchers briefly removed the normal acceleration signal and watched an animal use its flexible spine, limbs, and independently rotating body sections to change orientation while conserving angular momentum. Félicette’s later rocket flight was a genuine suborbital space mission, but it was a different experiment with a different question.
