The best aquarium light for a hooded tank is the one that fits the hood or frame, delivers enough light for your fish or plants, and preserves access for feeding and equipment. Measure the opening first, identify whether your hood uses a replaceable lamp, then choose among a complete fitted hood, a retrofit strip, or a replacement lamp. There is no single brightest or best model for every aquarium because water depth, lamp distance, lid position and plant placement change the light that reaches the substrate.
Start with fit, not wattage
A light that does not sit securely in the hood is the wrong choice regardless of its advertised brightness. Measure the aquarium length and the hood or frame opening, then check the hood brand and model. Also determine whether the existing hood accepts a modular lamp or whether the whole fixture must be replaced.
- Complete hood: choose this when you need a fitted lid that rests inside the aquarium frame.
- Retrofit strip: choose this when you already have a glass cover or a compatible Aqueon hood.
- Replacement lamp: choose this when the installed modular lamp is dim or has failed.
A hood also affects evaporation and daily access. A fitted lid can limit open-water evaporation while retaining a feeding door and rear openings for accessories; a strip used with a glass top depends on that cover for the same enclosure.

Choose the right product path
Choose the Deluxe LED Full Hood for a fitted-lid replacement
This is the most straightforward route when your aquarium size matches the documented model. The Day White lamp is interchangeable, and the optional second-lamp position provides an upgrade path within the hood. The feeding door and rear breakouts preserve routine access without removing the entire lid. Confirm the tank dimensions and frame shape because “20-inch” does not by itself identify every aquarium that will accept the hood.

Choose the LED Strip Light for a retrofit
The strip fixture is intended for use with a glass top or as a retrofit in an existing Aqueon hood. Its three-way switch and moon-glow accent add basic day and night control without requiring a separate smart controller. Measure the available shelf or slot against the listed 19.75 × 2.13 × 5-inch dimensions, and check that the cover does not block the light or interfere with filters and cords.
Choose a replacement lamp when the fixture still works
If the hood or strip accepts a modular Aqueon lamp, replacing the lamp is less disruptive than replacing the entire fixture. Aqueon says these lamps snap into compatible LED fixtures, strips and full hoods. Select the color variant for the effect you want, but do not assume a color name indicates a particular PAR level for plants.

Match intensity to fish, plants and tank depth
Fish-only aquariums
Fish generally need a dependable day/night rhythm rather than the highest possible intensity. Aqueon warns that excessive light can encourage algae, so avoid oversizing a fixture simply because a brighter model is available. Use the hood’s controls or a timer to provide a consistent photoperiod.
Beginner planted aquariums
Aquarium Co-Op recommends LEDs for most beginner planted tanks, but the amount of usable light at the substrate depends on tank height, distance from the lamp, lid interference and where plants sit. Low-demand plants may work under a modest hood light, while deeper tanks or higher-demand plants need more intensity and better spread. No standardized independent PAR comparison establishes one hood-compatible model as the universal winner.

Why wattage alone is misleading
Electrical wattage describes power consumption, not the light reaching your plants. Two fixtures with similar wattage can deliver different intensity and coverage, and a raised lamp or thick cover can reduce the light at the substrate. Judge a fixture by its measured or documented performance in your specific setup, not by wattage alone.
Set a day/night schedule
Aquarium life depends on a regular day/night cycle. Use the fixture’s switch consistently, or add a timer when the light has no built-in timer. Keep the night period genuinely dark; a moon-glow accent is a low-level visual mode, not a substitute for darkness. If algae increases, shorten the light period or reduce intensity before replacing the fixture.

Buying and installation checklist
- Measure the tank length, frame opening and the usable space inside the hood.
- Record the hood brand and model, then verify whether it accepts a modular lamp.
- Decide whether you need a complete lid, a retrofit strip or only a replacement lamp.
