Brookesia nana, the nano-chameleon, is remarkable for its tiny size—but the record needs a qualification. The known male measured 13.5 mm from snout to vent (body length) and 22 mm including its tail. Researchers reported only two specimens, so the male is best described as the smallest known male reptile, not proof that every adult of the species is that small.
How small is the nano-chameleon?
The German-Malagasy team that described Brookesia nana reported these measurements for the two known specimens:
| Specimen | Body length | Total length, including tail |
|---|---|---|
| Male | 13.5 mm | 22 mm |
| Female | 19 mm | 29 mm |
Body length is measured from the snout to the vent; total length includes the tail. Keeping those measurements distinct matters when comparing animals: a body-length figure is not the same as a total-length figure.
Is it really the world’s smallest reptile?
The male is described by the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology as the smallest known male among roughly 11,500 known non-avian reptile species. It is therefore a strong contender for the smallest known reptile, but the record should be stated carefully: only one male and one female were reported, despite intensive searching. With so few specimens, scientists cannot yet say how much adult size varies within the species or whether an undiscovered individual might be smaller.

The female was identified as an adult after micro-CT imaging revealed two eggs. Researchers assessed the male as mature from its developed hemipenes. Those observations support treating the measured animals as adults, but they do not establish the full size range of the species. The collection’s account of the discovery and measurements gives the details.
Where and when was Brookesia nana discovered?
Researchers collected the specimens during a 2012 expedition to the Sorata massif in northern Madagascar. The species was formally described in 2021 in Scientific Reports as “Extreme miniaturization of a new amniote vertebrate and insights into the evolution of genital size in chameleons” (volume 11, article 2522; DOI: 10.1038/s41598-020-80955-1). The scientific paper is linked from the lead institution’s announcement.

Why is the nano-chameleon so small?
Researchers have not established why B. nana is so tiny. A small-island explanation does not fit this species: it lives in mountains on mainland Madagascar, rather than on a small island. Mainland habitat rules out that particular explanation; it does not identify what caused the species’ miniaturization. A 2024 Wildlife Madagascar overview likewise says the reason remains unknown and points to the need for more exploration and study.
What else did researchers learn?
Its closest relative is not another famously tiny chameleon
The researchers identified Brookesia karchei, a species nearly twice as large, as the nano-chameleon’s closest relative—not B. micra, another notably small chameleon. They interpret this relationship as evidence that extreme miniaturization evolved independently in different lineages, a pattern called convergent evolution.

The male’s reproductive anatomy was unusually large relative to its body
In a comparison of 51 Malagasy chameleon species, the male’s hemipenes measured 18.5% of its body length, the fifth-largest relative proportion in that sample. The institution suggests that sexual size dimorphism—females being larger than males in these small species—may help explain the pattern. That is a proposed explanation, not a demonstrated cause.
Is the nano-chameleon endangered?
The available accounts report deforestation pressure in the habitat and say the area had recently been designated protected at the time of the 2021 announcement. They also note that dwarf chameleons can have very small ranges and expect B. nana’s range to be limited. These reports do not establish the species’ current site conditions or a formal current conservation category; no current IUCN status is confirmed here. The fact that a place was reported as protected in 2021 should not be read as a guarantee that habitat pressures have ended.

Can you keep a nano-chameleon as a pet?
The species is known from only two wild specimens in the cited accounts. Those sources do not establish that it is available in the pet trade or provide a basis for recommending captive care. Its tiny size and rarity are reasons to treat it as a wild animal of conservation interest, not as a pet to seek out.
