The scientific discovery associated with Will Smith’s Amazon filming was that green anacondas long treated as one species are actually two genetically distinct species: the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima) and the southern green anaconda (Eunectes murinus). The filmed female was estimated at 16–17 feet (4.9–5.2 metres), but that estimate does not establish that she was the largest anaconda ever found.
What did scientists discover?
Researchers reported that green anacondas comprise two species, rather than one. The distinction emerged from a project described by the research team as spanning almost 20 years and drawing on samples from all anaconda species across nine countries. Its findings were published in 2024 in the paper “Disentangling the Anacondas: Revealing a New Green Species and Rethinking Yellows”.
The team reported a 5.5% genetic divergence between the northern and southern green anacondas and estimated that their lineages separated almost 10 million years ago. The team compared the divergence figure with an approximately 2% genetic difference between humans and apes; that is an explanatory comparison, not evidence that the groups represent equivalent taxonomic cases.
Where do the two green anacondas live?
The research-team account describes the species’ ranges as follows:

How was the discovery connected to Will Smith’s show?
Crucial samples came from a 2022 expedition to the Bameno region of Baihuaeri Waorani Territory in Ecuador. The research-team account says the expedition took place at the invitation of, and in collaboration with, Waorani leader Penti Baihua. Will Smith joined as part of a National Geographic series; the official series page lists the episode “The Amazon: Dark Waters,” in which Smith joins local Waorani elder Penti Baihua in search of the giant green anaconda.

The filming and the scientific result are related, but they are not the same claim: the expedition provided important field samples, while the species finding rests on scientific analysis. As University of Queensland professor Bryan Fry told Live Science in an email interview: “Finding a new species is so often not a case of actively searching but rather having rigorous scientific process in place so that serendipity can strike.”

Fry estimated the female seen in the footage at 16–17 feet (4.9–5.2 metres), according to Live Science. That is an estimate for the filmed animal, not a standardized measurement or an official size record.

Other size reports refer to different animals and kinds of evidence. IFLScience reports a measured specimen at 6.3 metres and relays a 7.5-metre estimate for a snake that escaped. Those reports should not be combined with the filmed female’s estimate or treated as a definitive record: the available accounts do not establish a single, consistently measured largest-ever anaconda.
Is the 30-metre anaconda video real?
No. AFP Factuel found that viral videos claiming to show a 30-metre anaconda from Will Smith’s series were AI-generated and reported no credible evidence for a specimen that long. That fabrication does not invalidate the separate, real finding that green anacondas comprise two species.
What is known about the newly named northern species’ conservation status?
The study account discusses conservation implications and the need for approaches tailored to the distinct species. It does not, by itself, establish a formal current conservation category, population estimate, or country-by-country legal status for Eunectes akayima.
