The “10,000 stingrays” in this story is a reported group size, not a verified count of the rays photographed near Holbox Island, Mexico. The 2014 account identifies them as golden cownose rays and describes an encounter by photographer Sandra Critelli, but neither the species identification nor the size of that particular school is independently confirmed by the sources available here. Separate research documents seasonal migration by Atlantic cownose rays—but it does not establish a route connecting those rays to Holbox.
What happened near Holbox Island?
In a March 15, 2014, Futurism article, photographer Sandra Critelli described encountering a large group of rays in June near Holbox Island while looking for whale sharks. The article says the rays moved both across the surface and beneath it. Critelli recalled: “There were thousands!” Futurism’s account is an eyewitness description, not a scientific survey.
The article identifies the animals as golden cownose rays and says some groups can number up to 10,000. That figure should not be read as a measured count of the Holbox school: the article provides no counting method, and the image attribution does not establish how many animals appear in the photograph.
Are the rays in the photograph really golden cownose rays?
That identification comes from the original article; the sources reviewed do not independently authenticate the photograph or verify the species. Cownose rays in general have a kite-shaped body, a long, whip-like tail, and venomous spines, according to the Chesapeake Bay Program’s cownose ray guide. Those general traits do not, by themselves, confirm the identity of the animals in the Holbox image.

How do cownose rays migrate?
There is documented seasonal movement among cownose rays on the U.S. Atlantic coast. The Chesapeake Bay Program reports that cownose rays are present in Chesapeake Bay from May through October, with females remaining into autumn.
A multi-year tagging study reported by the Smithsonian tracked rays between summer habitat in Chesapeake Bay and winter habitat off Florida. Tagged rays also returned to the same summer areas. This evidence describes Atlantic-coast rays; it does not show that the Holbox group followed that route or that Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic populations share the same migration pattern. The distinction matters: a well-documented seasonal journey in one region cannot verify the location, species, count, or route of a different group.

A 2015 Virginia Sea Grant report archived by NOAA examined cownose ray movement and habitat use in Chesapeake Bay using acoustic telemetry. Its background noted important gaps in knowledge about annual migration and habitat use at the time. It is a research report, not a current census of ray populations or a count of the Holbox school.

Cownose rays have venomous tail spines. Do not enter or disturb a migrating school; keep a respectful distance and follow local wildlife guidance if you encounter rays. The original article also cautions against interfering with the animals. A large gathering is wildlife to observe without pursuing, touching, or blocking its movement.
