A TikTok account claimed that it collected more than 1.4 million frog eggs and planned to build a pond for 10 million frogs. Those figures were not independently verified, and later commentary says some footage came from existing documentaries and news reports. The documented concern is broader: collecting, moving or releasing wild amphibians can harm animals and ecosystems, including by spreading disease. The Guardian’s 2022 report covered the viral claims and expert warnings; it did not establish that millions of frogs were bred or released.
What was the “frog army”?
In 2022, The Guardian reported on a UK-based TikTok account whose holder said they had found eggs in a shallow pond, gathered more than 1.4 million, and raised the resulting tadpoles in a backyard pool. The account holder said, “I wanted to create the largest frog army in history,” and described a future plan for a pond for 10 million frogs. These are claims and plans attributed to the account—not verified counts or confirmed outcomes.
The Guardian said it could not independently confirm the account’s claims. It also reported a separate viral stunt in which another user claimed to release 100 million ladybugs in New York’s Central Park; that was a distinct, likewise unconfirmed claim, not evidence about the frogs.
Why did wildlife experts raise concerns?
The issue is not whether a large release would look dramatic online. Moving amphibians can expose animals and local wildlife to disease and can create risks for ecosystems, particularly if animals or pathogens are moved beyond their natural range.

In The Guardian’s report, conservation biologist Tierra Curry of the Center for Biological Diversity warned that releasing animals could hurt both the animals and the wildlife where they are released by creating a vector for disease and invasive species. Chris Nagano, described in the report as a former endangered-species biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, warned of unintended consequences for populations.
The article also gave wider disease context: it reported that a fungus spread through human redistribution of amphibians had caused a mass-extinction event, wiping out more than 90 frog species. That statistic concerns the broader impacts of amphibian disease and redistribution; it is not an impact attributed to this TikTok account.

Was the teenager really breeding and releasing millions of frogs?
The sources cited here do not establish that. The Guardian reported what the account holder claimed but could not independently verify it. A retrospective catalog entry from the Australian Centre for the Moving Image says footage associated with the account had been sourced from existing documentaries and news stories. That is a reason to treat the viral presentation cautiously, not a forensic verification of every video or proof of exactly what did or did not happen.
No verified later outcome, confirmed release, current account status or resulting population impact is established by these sources. The Guardian’s figures of more than 2 million followers and over 20 million likes describe the account at the time of its 2022 report, not its current reach.

What should you do if you find frog eggs or see someone moving frogs?
Do not collect eggs, transport amphibians or release animals because a social-media post suggests doing so. Wildlife rules differ by location, and an apparently well-meant intervention can spread disease or disrupt local wildlife. If you witness someone collecting or releasing wildlife, contact your state or local wildlife agency for guidance; The Guardian quoted Curry recommending that people report such activity to their state wildlife agency.
For an animal that appears injured or in immediate danger, ask the relevant wildlife agency or a qualified local wildlife rehabilitator what to do before handling or moving it. Avoid turning a viral video into instructions for copying a stunt.
