Yes—evidence from a 2024 study suggests that wild African savannah elephants use individually specific, name-like calls to address members of their families. In playback tests, elephants responded differently to calls originally directed to them than to calls directed to another elephant. Researchers have not decoded an elephant name as a distinct word or sound, so “name-like” is the more precise description.
What the study found
The study combined machine-learning analysis of elephant calls with playback experiments in the field. The analysis found that call structure carried information that could help predict the intended receiver. In playback tests, elephants reacted differently to calls originally addressed to them and calls originally addressed to another individual. Together, these results support the idea that some calls function as receiver-specific vocal labels.
The study authors summarized their finding this way: “Using a combination of machine learning and playback experiments in the field, we find that African savannah elephants address members of their family with individually specific, name-like calls.” (Nature Ecology & Evolution research briefing, 10 June 2024; see also the study abstract on PubMed.)
What “name-like” means—and what it does not
“Name-like” describes a signal associated with a particular receiver; it does not mean researchers have translated elephant names or isolated a human-readable name within a call. The exact acoustic feature that carries the receiver-specific information has not been identified.

Nor does the result show that every elephant utterance contains a name or that elephants use language in the same way humans do. Lead author Mickey Pardo told The Associated Press that elephants “probably don’t use names in the majority of utterances, so we wouldn’t expect 100%.” That observation is consistent with the study’s limited claim: some calls appear to address particular individuals, not that naming is present in every vocalization. How strong is the evidence?
The two lines of evidence answer different questions. Machine learning found receiver-related information in call structure; playback tests then showed a behavioral difference when elephants heard calls originally directed to them rather than to another elephant. The playback response strengthens the interpretation that the calls matter to their intended receivers, but it does not reveal exactly what an elephant understands about a call or prove a human-like concept of naming.

The Associated Press reported that researchers analyzed 469 calls. Its report also gave a 28% intended-receiver prediction result, compared with 8% for meaningless data. These are model results from this particular study, not the proportion of elephants with names or a universal measure of how accurately elephants recognize one another.
Which elephants were studied?
The findings concern wild African savannah elephants, with Kenyan fieldwork associated with Samburu and Amboseli. They should not be generalized to every elephant population or species: the study does not establish that Asian elephants or all African elephants use the same kind of calls. How this compares with other animal calls
Nature’s briefing contrasts the elephants’ calls with known cases in dolphins and parrots, which can imitate an addressee’s call. Its interpretation is that elephant labels are probably not imitations of the receiver’s own calls. That is a useful distinction, but it does not make the study a complete comparison of communication across animal species.

If a call can identify its intended receiver without simply copying that individual’s own call, it may offer a way to address another animal that is relevant to complex social relationships. The study provides evidence for that possibility in the elephants examined. Questions about how the signal is represented, how elephants learn it, and how far the behavior extends remain open.
