This 12-destination list, selected by Midwest Living in 2022, ranges from large indoor zoos and aquariums to free urban wildlife spaces, prairie refuges, birding marshes, a wolf center, a bison tour and a conservation campus with overnight lodging. “Best” is the magazine’s editorial framing, not a measured ranking, so choose by the experience you want.

The 12 destinations, and what makes each different
1. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium — Omaha, Nebraska
This is the choice for a classic, full-scale zoo day with unusually prominent indoor habitats. Midwest Living reported more than 900 animal species and highlighted the desert dome and zoo aquarium. The Skyfari chairlift provides elevated views that can include rhinos, gibbons and ostriches. Because the campus combines multiple major exhibits, it is better suited to visitors who want to spend much of a day than to a quick roadside stop.
2. Wildlife Prairie Park — Hanna City, Illinois
Wildlife Prairie Park focuses on native and formerly captive Midwestern wildlife rather than a global collection. The 2022 roundup described a 1.5-mile wooded trail passing enclosures for animals such as bobcats, black bears and bison. Fishing, wildlife talks and roughly 20 miles of hiking, mountain-biking and running trails make it the most recreation-oriented option on this list. Check trail surfaces, weather conditions and program times before setting out.
3. Belle Isle — Detroit, Michigan
Belle Isle combines a city-park visit with three distinct wildlife stops: a small herd of fallow deer, the free Belle Isle Aquarium and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. The deer herd traces to animals donated to Detroit in 1937, according to the roundup. This works well for travelers who want flexible, low-cost urban exploring rather than a ticketed, all-day zoo. Outdoor access and individual facility hours can vary, so confirm the current park information.
#1 Best Overall
4. Red River Zoo — Fargo, North Dakota
Red River Zoo emphasizes animals suited to climates comparable to North Dakota. The listed highlights include gray wolves, Bactrian camels, red pandas and Pallas’s cats. It is a practical pick for families who want a manageable zoo visit with species selected around cold-weather adaptations. Seasonal hours and exhibit availability should be checked directly with the zoo.
5. Tanganyika Wildlife Park — Goddard, Kansas
Tanganyika is the encounter-focused choice. The 2022 article mentioned otter and sloth experiences, penguin swimming, lemur feeding and a children’s zoo. Hands-on programs typically have their own schedules, capacity limits, safety rules and sometimes age requirements; treat them as optional add-ons and verify current details before promising a particular encounter to children.
Rank #2
6. Horicon Marsh — Mayville, Wisconsin
For birders, Horicon Marsh offers a very different day from a zoo. Midwest Living estimated that about 300,000 birds arrive during each spring and fall migration period, including Canada geese, tree swallows, trumpeter swans and yellow-billed cuckoos. An observation deck provides a straightforward starting point, while sightings depend on migration timing, weather and habitat conditions. Bring binoculars and allow time for quiet observation rather than expecting guaranteed views.
7. Indianapolis Zoo — Indianapolis, Indiana
The Indianapolis Zoo combines conventional exhibits with a distinctive dolphin-viewing dome. The roundup also highlighted an Animal Art Adventure and advised booking it ahead in 2022. Because special activities and reservation systems can change, check the zoo’s current calendar before building your itinerary around that program. This is a good fit when your group wants both animal exhibits and a scheduled interactive activity.
Rank #3
8. Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge — Prairie City, Iowa
Neal Smith is one of the strongest choices for seeing restored tallgrass prairie from your own vehicle and on foot. The refuge offers a year-round five-mile auto tour, prairie trails and a 0.5-mile paved accessible Overlook Trail. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service visitor information says refuge land is open from dawn to dusk, with year-round trails and free loaner binoculars, activity backpacks and other equipment during visitor-center hours. Snowshoes are available when snow depth reaches at least four inches.
In the bison and elk enclosure, remain on the road and inside your vehicle. Wildlife activity changes with species and season; dawn and dusk are often active periods, but no sighting is guaranteed. Check for closures and current rules before driving out.
Rank #4
9. International Wolf Center — Ely, Minnesota
The International Wolf Center is an interpretation-first visit. Observation windows look onto a resident wolf pack, while exhibits and films explain wolf behavior and coexistence. It suits visitors who want context about ecology and human–wolf relationships, including on days when outdoor wildlife viewing would be difficult. Resident-animal schedules and presentations can change, so consult the center’s current visitor information.
10. Johnny Morris’s Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium — Springfield, Missouri
Wonders of Wildlife is an indoor, weather-proof option built around museum galleries and aquarium habitats. The roundup describes about 1.5 miles of indoor scenes and a “bait ball” display containing 6,000 herring, and suggests allowing at least three hours. Actual visit length depends on pace, exhibits and crowd levels, but this is one of the destinations to reserve a large block of time rather than squeeze into a short stop.
Best Value
11. Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour — Custer, South Dakota
This is a guided-vehicle experience rather than a zoo. The tour departs from State Game Lodge in Custer State Park and is designed for viewing free-ranging bison in the park landscape. The 2022 source described daily departures, but departure times, operating dates, weather policies and booking requirements can change. Verify the operator’s current schedule and meeting instructions before traveling.
12. The Wilds — Cumberland, Ohio
The Wilds presents conservation at a landscape scale: the roundup described a 10,000-acre conservation center with guided driving tours and overnight options including yurts, a lodge and cabins. It is the best match here for travelers who want a managed safari-style ride and the possibility of turning the visit into an overnight nature trip. Tour routes, lodging inventory and seasonal operations vary, so confirm what is open for your dates.

Expect conditions, not a guaranteed animal list
Free-ranging animals move with weather, season, food and time of day. Build in flexibility, carry binoculars and treat a species list as habitat information rather than a promise. Dawn and dusk are often productive, but access rules and daylight hours still apply.
Use the right equipment
- Binoculars are useful for marshes, prairies and large enclosures; Emiquon Preserve’s visitor guidance specifically recommends them, along with water, insect repellent, sunscreen, rain gear and a field guide.
- Wear footwear suited to uneven or wet trails and check the forecast before choosing a boardwalk, hike or vehicle tour.
- At Neal Smith, free binoculars and activity backpacks are available during visitor-center hours; loan policies and hours should be confirmed before arrival.
Know access rules at Emiquon Preserve
Emiquon is a separate Illinois floodplain restoration preserve, not one of the 12 destinations above, but it illustrates the planning needed for outdoor wildlife sites. The Nature Conservancy describes it as more than 6,000 acres, open from sunrise to sunset, with trails, boardwalks, observation decks and canoe or boat launches. A permit is required for lake access for fishing or boating. There are no restrooms at the preserve; nearby Dickson Mounds Museum has restrooms and picnic facilities. Check current permit procedures and access conditions before launching.

A paved half-mile overlook route makes Neal Smith a particularly straightforward prairie option, while other sites may include grass, gravel, mud, stairs or long distances. Confirm trail closures, surface conditions, facility hours, admission and reservation requirements on each destination’s official visitor page.

Before you leave home
- Open the destination’s official visitor page and verify hours, admission, closures and reservation requirements for your date.
- Check whether a featured encounter, lecture, tour or vehicle departure is seasonal or capacity-limited.
- Pack water, weather protection and binoculars for outdoor sites; consider an optional pair of birding binoculars rather than assuming the venue supplies them.
- Plan for the correct duration: large indoor campuses can take several hours, while a marsh overlook or refuge trail may work as a short stop or a full day.
- Follow vehicle, trail and animal-distance rules. Never leave a designated road or approach wildlife for a photograph.
