Blast fishing (or dynamite fishing) means setting off an underwater explosion to stun or kill fish, then collecting the fish that float or are disabled. Reporting from Sri Lanka describes a rapid catch obtained with a very small crew, but also severe damage to coral reefs, marine life and the fishing economy that communities depend on. The practice is dangerous, destructive and reported as illegal in the Sri Lankan waters discussed by Futurism’s 2023 report.
What is blast fishing?
Blast fishing uses an underwater explosion rather than a net, hook or trap. The shock wave can kill or stun nearby fish, which fishers then retrieve from the surface or seabed. This explanation is intentionally high-level: explosives are hazardous and the method is illegal in many places.
A 2021 meta-analysis is quoted by Futurism as saying that “blasting is widespread, misreported, and ongoing.” That wording is relayed through the Futurism article; the primary paper was not independently reviewed here.
Why would anyone use an explosion to catch fish?
A fast, concentrated catch
Futurism, citing The Guardian’s 2023 reporting from Sri Lanka, says a single blast-fishing catch can reach up to 2,200 pounds, compared with roughly 50 or 60 pounds using traditional methods. Those are attributed figures, not a controlled comparison or a universal catch rate.

Fewer people are needed
The same Sri Lankan report contrasts a blast-fishing team of two or three people with a conventional crew of about 25. That comparison may make the method appear cheaper and easier for fishers under financial pressure, but it does not establish a standard crew size for every fishery.
Poverty and competition can shape the choice
In a separate feature about Tanzania, one fisher said, “I’m doing this because of poverty.” The statement describes that individual’s circumstances, not every community’s motivation. The Tanzania reporting also presents weak official follow-through as part of the problem.

Why is blast fishing harmful?
It destroys habitat, not just target fish
Coral reefs grow slowly and provide shelter, feeding grounds and nursery habitat for many species. In the Sri Lankan village of Salpayaru, fisher and supplier Wilson Perera told Futurism: “Everything within a 100-meter radius of the blast is destroyed – coral reefs, marine plants and animals.” That is a local source’s estimate, not a verified scientific measurement of a uniform blast radius.
Many animals are killed or injured
An explosion affects organisms that were never intended to be caught. Fish, invertebrates and other marine life can die immediately, while damaged reef structure can reduce survival and reproduction later.

Short-term gains can undermine future catches
Removing fish quickly while degrading their habitat can reduce the supply available to ordinary fishing methods. Perera warned that “An entire generation [of fishers] will be destitute [because of blast fishing].” This is a reported local warning about livelihoods, not a forecast that has been quantified for all Sri Lankan fisheries.
What has been reported in Sri Lanka?
The Futurism article focuses on coastal Sri Lanka, particularly Salpayaru. It reports reef and marine-life damage, concern about declining fish availability and pressure on fishing livelihoods. It also says Sri Lanka’s navy has seized explosives near beaches.

Susantha Kahawatta, identified in the article as head of Sri Lanka’s fisheries department, said: “The navy is stationed in limited areas and when we inform of an incident they are deployed to the relevant areas.” This describes the response quoted in that report; it is not a complete assessment of current enforcement capacity, prevalence or penalties.

Is dynamite fishing illegal?
The Futurism report describes blast fishing as illegal in the Sri Lankan waters it covers and reports enforcement actions there. Laws, definitions and penalties vary by jurisdiction, and the material available here does not verify current primary legal text or provide a universal rule. Readers should check the fisheries authority for the specific country or coastal area.
Why management and enforcement are difficult
Blast fishing can be concealed, conducted offshore or repeated after patrols leave. Poverty, competition for declining catches and limited enforcement may reinforce one another, as the Sri Lanka and Tanzania reports illustrate in their separate contexts. The Food and Agriculture Organization’s precautionary approach to fisheries advises managers to account for uncertainty and risk when protecting fish stocks and marine ecosystems; it does not provide a prevalence estimate or local penalty schedule for blast fishing.
