Did a Solitary Dolphin Develop a Larger Vocabulary? What the Delle Study Found

Researchers recorded 10,833 sounds from Delle, a solitary bottlenose dolphin in Denmark. The count reveals varied vocal activity, not a proven vocabulary or evidence that he felt lonely.

No. The available study does not show that a “lonely” dolphin developed a larger vocabulary than most dolphins. It documents unusually varied vocal activity by Delle, a solitary bottlenose dolphin observed in Svendborgsund, Denmark. Researchers recorded 10,833 sounds between December 2022 and February 2023, but a sound count is not a word count, and the meaning of the vocalizations remains unresolved.

What happened to Delle?

Delle was observed alone in the study setting. Earlier Scottish research identified the same dolphin as Yoda #1022, according to the headline reporting. During the Danish observation period, researchers recorded his sounds and analyzed their acoustic patterns.

The study describes both tonal sounds and burst-pulse sounds produced in rhythmic bouts. Reports also identify three signature whistles. These observations show a broad and active vocal repertoire in this individual; they do not establish that Delle was using words or that his repertoire was larger than that of other dolphins.

Why 10,833 sounds does not equal a vocabulary

A vocabulary comparison requires standardized rules for deciding what counts as a distinct signal, how repeated calls are treated, and whether signals have demonstrated meanings. The Delle study reports the number of recorded sounds, not the number of meaningful categories.

What was measured What it can support What it cannot establish
10,833 recorded sounds That Delle vocalized frequently during the December 2022–February 2023 recording period That he had 10,833 words or a larger vocabulary than other dolphins
Tonal and burst-pulse sounds in rhythmic bouts Acoustic variety and patterned vocal activity The meanings, grammar, or communicative success of those sounds
Three reported signature whistles That several individually distinctive whistle forms were observed That the whistles were human-like names or a complete lexicon

Was Delle actually lonely?

“Lonely” is an interpretation, not a measured finding. Delle was solitary in the observation setting, but the study does not determine his subjective emotional state. The researchers discuss possible explanations for his vocal behavior, including contact calling and self-directed vocal activity. Those are hypotheses, not confirmed functions.

What dolphin communication research does show

Signature whistles can carry identity information

Bottlenose dolphins develop individually distinctive signature whistles. A 2006 study found that dolphins could extract identity information from a whistle’s shape even after voice-related features were removed. This supports identity signaling, but it does not prove that each whistle is a human-like name or word.

Learned identity signals may be used as labels

A 2013 study reported evidence that dolphins use learned identity signals as labels when addressing other dolphins. This is important evidence of flexible social signaling, yet it does not turn every varied vocal sequence into a vocabulary or provide a numerical benchmark for Delle.

Social experience can influence a repertoire

A 2016 study of a cross-fostered Risso’s dolphin found vocal signals more like those of the bottlenose dolphins with which she was raised than those of wild Risso’s dolphins. The result suggests that social learning can shape vocal behavior. It concerns a different individual and does not demonstrate what Delle’s sounds meant.

How Delle compares with other dolphin cases

The sources do not provide a standardized vocabulary count for Delle or for “most dolphins.” Comparisons therefore need to keep several distinctions separate:

  • Species: Delle is a bottlenose dolphin; other examples may involve Risso’s or common dolphins.
  • Setting: Wild, captive, solitary, and cross-fostered animals experience different social conditions.
  • Unit of measurement: A recording may count sounds, acoustic types, identity signals, or signals with experimentally supported meanings.
  • Evidence level: An individual observation cannot automatically be ranked against a systematic population study.

A 2018 conference poster described a separate solitary common dolphin in West Scotland interacting with a harbour porpoise. Its preliminary results suggested that the dolphin’s acoustic repertoire changed during that interspecies association. That case involves a different species, animal, and context; it should not be combined with Delle’s findings.

What remains unknown

  • Whether Delle’s sounds had specific meanings for other dolphins.
  • Whether the rhythmic bouts served contact, navigation, social, or self-directed functions.
  • Whether his vocal activity differed quantitatively from that of other bottlenose dolphins recorded under comparable conditions.
  • Whether solitude caused the observed pattern.
  • Whether Delle experienced loneliness.

The accessible material reports findings but does not provide a verified, directly attributable quotation from a researcher in the central 2024 study. The evidence is therefore best represented through the study’s observations and qualified interpretations rather than through an invented quotation.

What can we responsibly conclude?

Delle’s recordings are notable because they document extensive, varied vocal activity from a solitary bottlenose dolphin, including tonal and burst-pulse sounds, rhythmic bouts, and three reported signature whistles. They add to evidence that dolphins produce individually distinctive and socially learned signals.

They do not show that Delle learned a larger vocabulary than most dolphins. Without comparable definitions and measurements, no ranking is possible. The strongest conclusion is narrower: researchers recorded many different sounds, while their communicative purpose and relationship to Delle’s solitary circumstances remain open questions.
