How Humpback Whales Migrate—and How Much Fat They Lose

Humpback whales draw on blubber during migration and breeding. A 2025 study estimated substantial seasonal loss for one Southern Hemisphere stock, using drone measurements and energy conversions.

Humpback whales build blubber reserves in productive feeding grounds, then draw heavily on those stores during migration and breeding. A 2025 study estimated that whales in one Southern Hemisphere population lost about 11,000 kilograms of blubber tissue across the seasonal cycle—but that is a model-based estimate for a particular stock, not a universal figure for every humpback.

Why do humpback whales migrate?

Humpbacks move seasonally between high-latitude waters where food is abundant and warmer breeding or calving grounds. They feed on krill and small fish, building energy reserves chiefly as blubber. During migration and on breeding grounds, they rely almost entirely on those reserves; NOAA describes feeding there as rare. NOAA’s humpback whale overview and its critical habitat report describe this seasonal pattern.

The route and calendar depend on the population. There is no single migration distance or schedule that applies to all humpback whales.

How far do humpback whales travel?

NOAA says some humpbacks travel about 5,000 miles between high-latitude feeding grounds and tropical breeding areas. In the North Pacific, some whales migrating from Alaska to Hawaii cover about 3,000 miles, with the journey taking as few as 28 days. Those are examples, not a species-wide itinerary. NOAA’s species overview provides those broad figures.

A separate satellite-tracking study followed seven whales from the western South Atlantic breeding area toward feeding grounds in the southern South Atlantic. Their tracked distances ranged from 902 to 7,258 kilometres. The whales travelled toward feeding areas at an average of 80.2 kilometres per day over journeys lasting 40 to 58 days; one identified destination area was north of the South Sandwich Islands. These figures describe that small, tracked sample, not other ocean populations. The 2020 western South Atlantic tracking study reports the results.

How much fat do humpback whales lose during migration?

A 2025 study estimated seasonal body-condition change for breeding stock G, a Southern Hemisphere population. Researchers used drone-based photogrammetry measurements from 103 adult whales sampled in Colombia and at the Western Antarctic Peninsula during 2017–2019. Their model placed peak condition between early March and late May and minimum condition between late August and early December, estimating an average decline of 36 percentage points in body condition over the migration-and-fasting cycle. Bernier-Graveline and colleagues’ 2025 study reports the analysis.

For a representative adult measuring 12.7 metres and weighing 35,000 kilograms, the model translated that change into:

  • 11,187 kilograms of blubber tissue, or about 11,000 kilograms;
  • 4,940 kilograms of blubber lipid, or about 5,000 kilograms;
  • 195,656,000 kilojoules of estimated energy, or about 196 million kilojoules; and
  • an energy equivalent of 56,557 kilograms of Antarctic krill, about 57,000 kilograms, with a reported interquartile range of roughly 40,000–71,000 kilograms.

These values are calculated estimates, not direct measurements of one whale’s weight loss or observations of a whale eating that quantity of krill. The researchers derived them from measured body shape and conversion assumptions. The 36-percentage-point result is a change in the study’s body-condition measure; it does not mean that every humpback loses 36% of its total body weight.

Do humpback whales eat while migrating?

They rely on stored blubber for much of migration and while on breeding grounds. Occasional feeding on breeding grounds is described as rare by NOAA, so the usual pattern is to feed on productive grounds, migrate, and draw on accumulated reserves rather than regularly refuel along the way. How much an individual feeds during a journey is not established by the stock-level estimate above.

Why a single fat-loss figure cannot describe every humpback

Body condition differs among feeding areas as well as across seasons. A NOAA-indexed North Atlantic study compared drone-derived condition in whales from the New York Bight, Gulf of Maine, Iceland, and Greenland. For a given body length, its estimates indicated that Gulf of Maine whales had 18% greater body mass than whales in the other three regional samples. That regional contrast is another reason not to apply stock G’s seasonal estimate to the whole species. The North Atlantic condition study describes the comparison.

When comparing whale energy estimates, check which population and season were studied, how many animals were sampled, what was measured, and whether the reported result is a condition index, blubber, lipid, or total body mass. A figure converted from body shape into estimated energy is not interchangeable with a direct mass measurement or a result from a different stock.
