Yes. Lago Santa Margarita, the community lake in Rancho Santa Margarita, Orange County, has fish and welcomes recreational fishing. The City of Rancho Santa Margarita reports spring stocking with bass, bluegill, catfish and mosquito fish. SAMLARC, the lake operator, says stocking occurs twice a year when water quality allows.
What fish are reported in Lago Santa Margarita?
The City’s recreation information identifies these as stocked fish groups:
| Fish reported by the City | What the available information establishes |
|---|---|
| Bass | Reported as a spring stocking group; the reviewed information does not identify the bass species. |
| Bluegill | Reported as a spring stocking group. |
| Catfish | Reported as a spring stocking group; the reviewed information does not identify the catfish species. |
| Mosquito fish | Included in the City’s stocking description; the City explains that they consume mosquito larvae. |
This is a list of reported stocked fish, not a complete scientific inventory of every fish currently living in the lake. The sources do not provide a current population estimate, stocking count, catch-rate data or confirmation that every stocked fish remains present.
Can you fish at Rancho Santa Margarita Lake?
Yes. SAMLARC’s current Fishing page says: “Recreational fishing is welcome—the Lake is stocked twice per year when water quality allows.” The phrase “when water quality allows” matters: stocking is conditional, so a scheduled or expected stocking should not be treated as guaranteed.

Fishing is described as catch-and-release
SAMLARC’s December 14, 2022 lake overview described fishing at Lago Santa Margarita as catch-and-release. Because that statement is dated, check SAMLARC’s current Fishing Guidelines and Lake & Lakeshore Guidelines before you go for the rules that apply on your visit.
Use designated areas and dispose of tackle properly
In a June 3, 2026 community reminder, SAMLARC asked anglers to fish only in designated areas. It also asked visitors to dispose of leftover bait, hooks and fishing line at designated lure stations. These instructions help protect wildlife, water quality and other lake users.
