Are There Freshwater Flying Fish? Yes—but They Jump, Not Truly Fly

Freshwater hatchetfishes are sometimes called flying fish because they launch from the water. They are distinct from marine flyingfish and make jumps or brief ballistic aerial movements, not powered flight.

Yes. Some freshwater South American hatchetfishes in the family Gasteropelecidae launch themselves from the water and travel briefly through the air. They are not the same animals as marine flyingfish (family Exocoetidae), which glide over tropical and subtropical seas. For freshwater hatchetfish, “jump,” “launch,” or “brief aerial movement” is more accurate than “powered flight.”

Which freshwater fish are called “flying fish”?

The nickname usually refers to South American freshwater hatchetfishes, members of Gasteropelecidae. Their unusual body and fin structure lets them make a rapid take-off from the surface. A secondary scholarly source also describes these fish as making short jumps: Universitätsverlag Göttingen document.

That family is separate from Exocoetidae, the marine flyingfish family. Sharing the word “flying” does not mean the two groups are closely related or use the same form of locomotion.

Do freshwater hatchetfish actually fly?

They make a coordinated launch and a short ballistic trajectory, but the available locomotion study does not support active, powered flight. Francine C. Wiest’s 1995 peer-reviewed study used high-speed video at 200 frames per second and kinematic analysis to examine the take-off: Wiest, “The specialized locomotory apparatus of the freshwater hatchetfish family Gasteropelecidae”.

Cardinal Tetra Live Freshwater Aquarium Fish – 5 +2 Free Count – Paracheirodon innesi, 1–2 cm Small Tropical Community Fish – Colorful Schooling Fish for Planted Tanks & Community Aquariums
  • Bright Cardinal Tetra Live Fish: Add vibrant blue and red color to your freshwater aquarium with Cardinal Tetras, a classic tropical schooling fish loved for planted and community tanks
  • Peaceful Community Aquarium Fish: Cardinal Tetras are calm, active swimmers that pair well with other small peaceful species in properly maintained freshwater aquariums
  • Compatible with Community Tanks: Suitable for peaceful freshwater setups with other small, non-aggressive fish such as rasboras, small tetras, corydoras, and other gentle tank mates
  • Enhances Planted Aquariums: Cardinal Tetras stand out beautifully against green plants, driftwood, and dark substrate, making them a favorite for aquascaped tanks
  • Arrival Care: Fish are carefully selected and packed for safe delivery. Acclimate slowly upon arrival and place into a stable, cycled freshwater aquarium

What happens during take-off?

  • The fish performs a rapid C-start, a strong body bend used to accelerate away from the water.
  • Both pectoral fins abduct in a coordinated movement as the fish leaves the surface.
  • It follows a brief aerial, ballistic path rather than generating continuous lift with repeated wingbeats.

Wiest’s abstract concludes that “active flight in the gasteropelecids is unlikely.” That is why “jumping” or “launching” is the scientifically safer description.

How are they different from marine flyingfish?

Feature Freshwater hatchetfishes Marine flyingfish
Family Gasteropelecidae Exocoetidae
Habitat Freshwater Marine; Exocoetus species occur in tropical and subtropical ocean waters
Aerial movement Coordinated take-off, jump, and brief aerial trajectory Gliding using enlarged fins and a body form adapted for glide performance
Best wording “Jumps,” “launches,” or “makes brief aerial movements” “Glides” or “flies” in the everyday sense

Studies of marine flyingfish focus on aerodynamic gliding and enlarged fin surfaces, not the freshwater hatchetfish take-off mechanism: Park and Choi, “Aerodynamic characteristics of flying fish in gliding flight” and Fish, “Wing design and scaling of flying fish with regard to flight performance”.

Can a marine flyingfish live in freshwater?

No evidence in the cited material supports treating marine flyingfish as freshwater fish. Exocoetidae are ocean-dwelling fish; a 2017 study describes Exocoetus as a genus found in tropical and subtropical ocean waters: “Phylogenetics and biogeography of the two-wing flyingfish (Exocoetidae: Exocoetus)”. The freshwater animals called “flying fish” are hatchetfishes, not Exocoetidae.

Does every freshwater hatchetfish species jump?

The cited evidence does not establish that every Gasteropelecidae species shows identical aerial behavior, nor does it provide a current, authoritative species-by-species checklist. It supports the family-level locomotion pattern studied by Wiest, so avoid saying that all freshwater hatchetfish “fly.”

What should aquarium keepers expect?

If you keep a freshwater hatchetfish, interpret “flying” as a surface escape jump. A secure, fully covered aquarium is sensible because a fish capable of launching from the water can leave an open tank. The sources used here do not establish species-specific jumping frequency, distance, speed, or care requirements, so those details should not be generalized across the family.
