Why Billions of Alaska Snow Crab Disappeared—and How Climate Change Fits In

NOAA research links the disappearance of more than 10 billion eastern Bering Sea snow crab to a climate-amplified marine heatwave that raised energy needs, shrank feeding habitat and likely caused starvation.

More than 10 billion snow crab appear to have disappeared from Alaska’s eastern Bering Sea between 2018 and 2021. The best-supported explanation is a climate-amplified marine heatwave that left the crabs needing far more energy while shrinking the cold, productive area where they could feed. NOAA Fisheries scientists identify starvation as the most likely immediate cause. Climate change is strongly implicated in creating those conditions, but the evidence does not show that it alone killed every crab.

Which crabs disappeared?

This was a collapse of eastern Bering Sea snow crab, not all crab species in Alaska. NOAA surveys found the fewest snow crab on the continental shelf in 2021 since the survey began in 1975. The estimate of more than 10 billion missing animals comes from survey and population models; it is not a direct count of carcasses.

The decline followed an unusually large cohort of juveniles recorded in 2015. Juvenile abundance fell by roughly half between 2018 and 2019, as the region experienced an exceptional marine heatwave.

What happened during the 2018–2019 heatwave?

Bottom temperatures reached record highs while sea ice reached record lows. NOAA describes the associated environmental shift as unlike conditions observed during the history of its Bering Sea fisheries surveys.

A three-part stress on snow crab

  • Higher energy demand: Laboratory tests found that snow crab caloric requirements nearly doubled when water temperature rose from 0°C to 3°C.
  • Less feeding habitat: Warmer conditions contracted the cold-water habitat in which snow crab normally forage, concentrating suitable grounds into a much smaller area.
  • Worse body condition: Surveyed crab weighed less than usual, consistent with animals unable to meet their increased energy needs.

These findings support starvation as the most likely proximate mechanism. The peer-reviewed Science study by Szuwalski and colleagues inferred this mechanism from caloric calculations, the crabs’ reduced distribution, and measured body condition rather than from a direct tally of deaths.

How is climate change connected?

NOAA’s later synthesis describes “borealization”: the southeastern Bering Sea shifting from predominantly Arctic conditions toward a warmer, sub-Arctic ecosystem. That analysis attributes the broader shift to human-caused climate change.

In the study summarized by NOAA, the warm, boreal conditions associated with the snow crab collapse were more than 200 times as likely in the present climate—defined there by a 1.0°–1.5°C warming rate—as in the preindustrial climate. Under the study’s stated future scenario, Arctic conditions were expected in only 8% of years in the southeastern Bering Sea. Those are model-based findings for the specified region and scenarios, not a universal probability for every year or every Alaska crab population.

The careful causal chain is therefore: human-caused warming increased the likelihood of an extreme marine heatwave and a warmer ecosystem; the heatwave increased snow crab’s metabolic costs and reduced feeding habitat; severe energy shortage likely caused much of the mortality. That supports climate change as a major driver of risk, not as proof that it was the sole cause of every individual death.

Did fishing, predators or disease cause the collapse?

Researchers examined several alternatives. Available NOAA analyses do not support any of them as the primary explanation for the scale and timing of the decline.

Possible factor What the evidence indicates
Groundfish-fishery bycatch NOAA estimates 937,078 pounds of snow crab bycatch mortality from July 2018 through June 2021, compared with an estimated 1.4-billion-pound biomass decline—about 0.06%. This comparison concerns estimated biomass, not the count of more than 10 billion animals, and does not mean bycatch was zero.
Pacific cod predation Models found no strong relationship between mortality variation and predation, and the missing crab were generally larger than the sizes Pacific cod usually eat.
Cannibalism Considered by scientists, but not identified in the available analyses as the dominant driver.
Disease Bitter crab syndrome prevalence increased at monitored sites from 2014 to 2017. NOAA continued monitoring and examined archived samples, but disease has not been established as the main explanation for the 2018–2021 collapse.
Directed fishing Fishing pressure was evaluated alongside environmental factors; the heatwave-linked starvation mechanism best matches the observed combination of temperature, habitat contraction and poor condition.

Why did Alaska close the fishery?

Alaska closed the commercial snow crab fishery for the 2022–2023 season after the population estimate fell sharply. A closure protects the remaining stock when survey abundance and mature-stock measures fall below management requirements; it is not itself evidence that every crab in the ecosystem has vanished.

What happened to the fishery afterward?

The latest specific opening decision identified here is Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s October 6, 2025 announcement for the 2025/26 season. It said estimated mature snow crab biomass exceeded the threshold needed to open the Bering Sea District fishery.

Management item 2025/26 announcement
Season opening October 15, 2025
Total allowable catch (TAC) 9.3 million pounds
Scheduled Eastern Subdistrict closure May 15, 2026
Scheduled Western Subdistrict closure May 31, 2026
Hybrid crab provision An additional 1 million pounds of TAC was associated with unusually high hybrid Chionoecetes abundance, with vessels expected to target hybrids in a specified area.

A TAC is the permitted catch for a particular management season. It should not be treated as a direct measure of total abundance, the number of mature males, or the number of small crab. The sources identified here do not establish a 2026/27 opening decision or quota, so the 2025/26 figures should not be presented as current limits for that later season.

What should readers take away?

  • The affected population was eastern Bering Sea snow crab, measured through surveys between 2018 and 2021.
  • The collapse coincided with the 2018–2019 marine heatwave, record-low sea ice and record-high bottom temperatures.
  • Warmer water nearly doubled calculated caloric needs while suitable foraging habitat contracted; poorer body condition supports starvation as the likely immediate mechanism.
  • NOAA links the regional shift toward warmer sub-Arctic conditions to human-caused climate change.
  • Bycatch, predation and disease were investigated but are not supported as the main cause of the observed collapse.
