The snake scientists recently rediscovered is Calamaria berezowskii, known as Berezowski’s reed snake. Described from China in 1896, it went more than a century without reliable confirmed records. Three snakes collected in Sichuan between 2017 and 2022 matched the original description, and mitochondrial DNA supported their identity as a distinct species rather than the related Calamaria pavimentata.
Which snake was rediscovered?
Berezowski’s reed snake (Calamaria berezowskii Günther, 1896) is a small Asian reed snake. British zoologist Albert Günther described it in 1896 from material collected in China. The species was named for Russian zoologist and collector Michael Berezowski.
For decades afterward, dependable records were missing. That gap led some herpetologists to question whether the original name represented a valid species at all, or whether it was the same animal as C. pavimentata.
Why did scientists doubt that it existed?
The problem was not a dramatic claim that the snake was imaginary. It was a taxonomic problem created by the absence of verifiable later specimens. When a species is known from an old description but cannot be reliably found again, researchers may suspect that the original specimen was misidentified, that the name is a synonym of another species, or that the animal is exceptionally difficult to detect.

That uncertainty persisted for more than 100 years, until field collections in Sichuan provided new material for direct comparison.
What changed in the rediscovery?
- 1896: Günther described C. berezowskii.
- 2017–2022: Researchers collected three specimens on the eastern slope of Mount Gongga in Luding County, Sichuan, China.
- July 5, 2024: Ya-Ting Liang and colleagues published a taxonomic revalidation in Zoosystematics and Evolution, volume 100, pages 897–911.
- July 11, 2024: The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) published a popular account of the rediscovery.
The new specimens matched the diagnostic features in the 1896 description. The authors therefore redescribed the snake and restored C. berezowskii as a valid species.

How did researchers prove it was a separate species?
Morphological comparison
The team examined external anatomy and compared the specimens with related Calamaria snakes. Features used in the diagnosis include:
- Four supralabials (upper-lip scales)
- One preocular and one postocular scale
- An eye diameter shorter than the distance from the eye to the mouth
- A yellowish collar or light nuchal ring
- A brown to blackish-brown back
- Light khaki or white ventral scales
- A relatively short tail that tapers slowly to an obtuse, or blunt, point
- Dorsal scale rows reducing to six at the tail
Mitochondrial DNA
Liang’s team also sequenced mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cyt b). The analysis placed C. berezowskii as the sister lineage of C. pavimentata and reported a Cyt b genetic distance of 0.190 between them. In combination with the morphological match, that result supported recognizing Berezowski’s reed snake rather than treating its name as a synonym.

DNA alone did not make the case. The conclusion came from agreement between independently assessed anatomy and molecular evidence.
What does Berezowski’s reed snake look like?
Its most conspicuous reported feature is a pale yellowish collar behind the head, contrasting with a brown or nearly black-brown dorsum. The underside is described as light khaki or white. The tail is short and ends in a blunt point rather than a sharply tapered tip.

Popular reports describe the snakes as roughly one foot long and suggest that their low, leaf-litter-associated habits and subdued colors can make them easy to overlook. That length and behavior description is secondary reporting, not a formal measurement supplied in the taxonomic paper, so it should be treated as approximate.

The 2024 study identifies C. pavimentata as Berezowski’s reed snake’s closest sampled relative. The researchers used head shields, labial counts, tail form, dorsal scale rows, coloration and Cyt b data when evaluating the relationship. The available report does not provide a complete side-by-side set of C. pavimentata measurements, so unsupported differences should not be inferred.

Does rediscovery mean the species is safe?
No. Finding three specimens establishes that the species is extant and clarifies its taxonomic status, but it does not measure the total population or its trend. The available reports do not provide a population estimate, abundance figure, diet, or formal conservation category. The snakes’ current distribution, habitat requirements and threats therefore remain important unanswered questions.
Why this rediscovery matters
Species names are hypotheses that can be tested as new evidence becomes available. In this case, an 1896 description that had become taxonomically doubtful was checked against modern specimens, detailed morphology and DNA. The result is not merely a rare-snake sighting: it is a corrected account of biodiversity that allows future surveys and conservation assessments to target the right animal.
