Will Joro Spiders Invade New York City—and Are They Dangerous to Pets?

Joro spiders may eventually reach New York, but “flying” headlines overstate the evidence. Here is what their spread, bite studies and Cornell’s New York expert mean for people and pets.

Probably not soon, and there is no evidence that Joro spiders pose a direct threat to New York City residents or their pets. Joro spiders are spreading north from established populations in the Southeast, but “flying” is misleading and ballooning does not prove an imminent New York invasion. Cornell’s New York State IPM director described their spread as slow, while acknowledging that people could accidentally transport individual spiders. The ecological effects of a future population remain uncertain.

What is—and is not—known about Joro spiders in NYC?

Joro spiders (Trichonephila clavata) are large orb-weaving spiders native to East Asia. The first documented U.S. population was found in northeast Georgia in 2014. A University of Georgia Extension account published in 2026 says the spiders had spread about 75 miles in all directions from that original detection by 2022.

A peer-reviewed synthesis by Chuang and colleagues reported that, by October 2022, the known range covered at least 120,000 km² across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee, with additional reports in Alabama, Maryland, Oklahoma and West Virginia. That is a historical range snapshot, not a live 2026 map.

The available evidence reviewed here does not verify whether an individual Joro spider has been recorded in New York City, nor does it establish that NYC is free of them. Those are different questions:

Situation What it means
Transported individual A spider or egg sac could move accidentally on a vehicle, plant, outdoor furniture or other item. This would not show that the species is reproducing locally.
Local sighting One spider or web could be documented in the city without a self-sustaining population.
Established population Repeated reproduction and spread over multiple seasons would demonstrate that the species is established. The sources cited here do not provide a verified 2026 NYC survey.

Can Joro spiders really fly or parachute?

Adult Joro spiders do not have wings. Young spiders can balloon: they release strands of silk that catch air currents and carry them short or, under favorable conditions, longer distances. Calling this “flying” or “parachuting” makes the process sound more controlled and predictable than it is.

The 2022 synthesis specifically warned against inferring a rapid East Coast invasion from ballooning ability alone. Natural dispersal appears to have driven much of the Southeast expansion, but human transport cannot be ruled out. Wind, temperature, landscape and survival all affect whether a ballooning spider reaches suitable habitat.

How quickly could they reach New York City?

There is no reliable arrival date. In a 2024 Cornell interview, Alejandro Calixto, director of the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program, said Joro spread is slow compared with insects such as spotted lanternflies. He said accidental introductions are possible, but a population comparable to those in Georgia or South Carolina would take many years to develop. He also emphasized that the timing is difficult to predict.

That assessment should not be converted into a guaranteed timeline. A single transported spider, a few sightings and a reproducing citywide population are separate outcomes, and the evidence does not establish which—if any—has occurred in NYC by 2026.

Are Joro spiders dangerous to people or pets?

The best-supported answer is low direct risk. Cornell’s Calixto said Joro spiders are not aggressive toward humans or pets and do not pose a direct threat. They generally remain on webs to capture insects rather than seeking out people or animals. As he put it: “Every spider has venom, but their venom is primarily for capturing prey and defense, not for attacking humans.”

That does not mean a bite is impossible. A peer-reviewed study conducted in 2024 exposed 73 adult female spiders to staged interactions and separately examined bites involving 23 selected adult participants. In those controlled conditions, bite risk was low; irritation, redness, itching and swelling generally declined over the following day. Participants were screened to exclude several health risks, and the sample was small, so the results are reassuring evidence—not a guarantee for every person, pet or circumstance.

What about dogs and cats?

There is no evidence in the supplied sources that Joro spiders hunt pets, pursue them or cause a characteristic poisoning syndrome. A curious dog or cat could still disturb a spider or web, just as it could with any defensive spider. Keep pets from deliberately chewing unknown spiders, and contact a veterinarian if a pet develops significant swelling, breathing trouble, weakness, repeated vomiting or other concerning symptoms after any suspected bite.

Could Joro spiders harm NYC’s ecosystem?

Possible ecological effects are less settled than the direct-safety question. Joro spiders are established non-native spiders in the Southeast, but “invasive” should not be treated as proof of measured ecological damage. The 2022 synthesis said impacts in the new North American ecosystem were poorly known and identified possible competition with native orb-weavers as a research priority. Cornell likewise described potential competition with the golden silk weaver as a concern that requires study.

There is no supported basis here for claiming that Joro spiders will control spotted lanternflies, have already reduced NYC wildlife, or will produce a quantified ecological effect in the city. Researchers continue to distinguish the possibility of competition from demonstrated harm.

What should you do if you find a Joro spider or web?

1. Keep the immediate response calm

Do not handle the spider with bare hands. Move children and pets away from the web, take a clear photograph from a safe distance, and note the date and location. A photograph can help an extension specialist or local authority assess an identification; many large orb-weavers are not Joro spiders.

2. Decide whether the web is in a high-contact spot

A web across a doorway, porch, deck or frequently used walkway is more likely to be accidentally disturbed than a web at the edge of a yard. Georgia Extension’s 2026 guidance focuses removal on those high-contact areas and says peripheral webs can be left alone. That is practical Georgia advice, not a New York mandate to kill spiders.

3. Remove an accessible web mechanically if needed

For a web that repeatedly blocks people, Georgia Extension describes localized use of a rake, broom or stick. Destroying the web alone may not be permanent because the spider can rebuild it. Avoid reaching into dense vegetation or climbing to remove a web.

4. Skip unnecessary pesticides

No pesticide is needed to answer the basic safety concern. Georgia Extension notes that formulations can change, pyrethroids can affect non-target organisms, and targeted treatment has fewer unintended effects than broad application. Never use a chemical on or around a pet unless its current label permits that use and a veterinarian or qualified local professional advises it.

5. Report a suspected unusual find responsibly

Because a current NYC occurrence cannot be confirmed from the sources above, send photographs and location details to a New York Cooperative Extension or other official local identification service rather than relying on social-media identification. Reporting one spider does not establish a breeding population, but good records help track changes.

What would count as a real NYC invasion?

Strong evidence would include verified specimens or egg sacs from multiple locations, repeated observations across seasons, and juveniles or adults demonstrating local reproduction and spread. A viral photograph, a single transported spider or a web on a moving vehicle would not by itself meet that standard.

For now, the responsible conclusion is narrower: Joro spiders are expanding in the Southeast; ballooning and accidental transport make future arrivals possible; and the timing and ecological consequences in New York City remain uncertain. Their documented direct risk to people and pets is low.
