The viral “zombie shark” was not alive: it was the decaying remains of a small reef shark inside a broken display case at an abandoned aquarium. Reports say the aquarium was in Spain, but its exact location, the shark’s species, and how the specimen was preserved have not been confirmed.
What happened to the shark?
French urban explorer Juj’ Urbex shared footage of the mummified-looking shark in 2022. The unsettling “zombie” description refers to its appearance, not to a living or reanimated animal. Live Science described the remains as a small reef shark in a broken display case; the reporting does not identify an exact species. (Live Science; BGR)
Where was the abandoned aquarium?
Juj’ Urbex reportedly said the aquarium was in Spain and had closed in 2014 after damage from a 43-foot (13-meter) wave. The aquarium itself has not been identified publicly in the reviewed reports. Live Science noted that a wave of that height hit Spain’s northwest coast in January 2014, making that region a possibility—not a confirmed location. (Live Science)
Why did the shark look mummified?
The footage shows a broken case and remains with skin and flesh that appeared to be decaying. Reports proposed that the shark may have been chemically preserved for display, perhaps in an airtight case, and that damage to the case could have exposed it to conditions that allowed decay and mold to develop. That is a plausible explanation, not a verified record of this specimen’s treatment or a confirmed timeline of what happened after the case broke. (Live Science; BGR)

What else appeared in the abandoned aquarium?
Juj’ Urbex’s account also described decaying remains of an octopus and squid in broken display jars, along with two dried sea stars that had not begun to decay. A fallen foam replica of a giant squid was also visible; it was a model, not a real specimen. (Live Science)
What Juj’ Urbex said about the discovery
Live Science attributed the translated comment “made me feel a lot of sorrow for this beast” to Juj’ Urbex, describing her reaction to finding the already-dead shark. (Live Science)
