Bed bugs may be among the earliest insects to adapt to human living conditions—and perhaps the first true urban insect pest—but science has not established a definitive “oldest pest.” The answer depends on what counts as oldest: an insect lineage inferred from DNA, ancient remains found near people, or evidence that a pest was associated with stored food.
What does “oldest pest” mean?
Different evidence dates different events. A genome-based estimate can suggest when lineages diverged or when an insect population changed; it does not date a particular encounter with a person. Archaeological remains provide an age for specimens in a place, while a food deposit can document a pest association without identifying the first time it happened.

“BP” means before present, the conventional dating reference used in archaeology. These entries should not be read as a single ranked timeline: their dates measure different things, and their links to humans vary in directness.
Why bed bugs are a leading candidate
A 2025 genome study compared bed bug lineages and modelled their demographic histories. Its authors proposed that the human-associated lineage may have been connected with people potentially hundreds of thousands of years ago. They also found a pronounced demographic change around 13,000 years ago that tracked human population history.

The authors suggest that bed bugs may represent “the first true urban pest insect species.” That is a proposal based on genomic patterns and modelling, not proof of the first human-pest encounter. The study does not identify a specific ancient bed bug specimen or show an uninterrupted, directly observed relationship across that span. Its “urban pest” framing is also narrower than the broad everyday meaning of pest: it concerns an insect adapted to human living conditions.
What the ancient bed bug remains show
Paisley Caves in Oregon have yielded remains of the genus Cimex dated to approximately 5,100 calibrated years BP and from 9,400 to almost 11,000 calibrated years BP. The 2017 study described these as the oldest known remains of the genus then found in probable contact with humans.

That finding is more direct physical evidence than a genomic estimate, but its claim is carefully bounded: it concerns Cimex remains in probable human contact at one North American site. It does not establish that these are the oldest remains of any pest, or the earliest pest relationship anywhere.
What lice genetics can—and cannot—tell us
In a 2004 genetic study, Reed and colleagues identified two ancient louse lineages and estimated that they diverged 1.18 million years ago. They argued that the presence of one lineage on modern humans could be explained by a host switch from an archaic Homo species.

This is a hypothesis drawn from genetic evidence, not an archaeological record of lice on a particular person. The authors said such a host switch would require direct physical contact between modern and archaic humans. They also noted that contact could allow lice to transfer without establishing that the groups interbred. The estimate therefore concerns lineage divergence in that study, not a settled date for when lice first became human pests.
Why stored-food pests belong in the story
Human pest history is not limited to parasites that bite. Storing food creates opportunities for insects to feed and multiply around people. At Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, a pharaonic harbor and expedition staging area on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, a sealed deposit about 3,800 years old contained insect remains and emmer wheat. The Smithsonian’s record of the 2010 study describes Tenebroides mauritanicus as the earliest known association with stored grains.

This dates a documented association in a particular archaeological context; it does not establish when the beetle first began exploiting human food stores. It also illustrates why “oldest pest” depends on whether the question is about biting insects, urban pests, or insects living off stored food.

The same study reconstructed movement west to the Middle East about 1,200 years ago and east during the European colonial period about 390 years ago. These are model-based estimates of origin and spread, not exact dates taken from contemporary records. The study treated the first historical records, around 250 years ago, separately from its earlier genomic reconstruction.
So, which pest was first?
There is no defensible single winner across these examples. Bed bugs are a strong candidate for an early insect adapted to human living conditions, and the 2025 authors propose they may have been the first true urban insect pest. Lice genetics points to a much older evolutionary history, but the inferred lineage divergence is not the same as a dated pest encounter. Excavated Cimex remains and the Egyptian stored-grain deposit provide tangible evidence of particular ancient associations, each with its own limits.
The accurate answer is that people have likely lived alongside pest insects for a very long time, but the oldest relationship depends on the organism, the kind of evidence, and what “pest” means.
