The exact headline is from a BGR article published October 9, 2019. It described seasonal tarantula activity in parts of California and the wider Bay Area—not a verified, quantified invasion of San Francisco in 2026.
Where the “hordes” headline comes from
BGR published “Hordes Of Tarantulas Are Crawling Across San Francisco Right Now” on October 9, 2019. The article connected sightings in parts of California and the Bay Area with warm fall weather and seasonal mating activity expected to last only a few days. That dated report is not evidence of a current event.
The available reporting does not establish a measured swarm in San Francisco proper, identify affected city neighborhoods, or provide a tarantula count. “San Francisco” in the headline should not be read as proof that the city itself experienced a documented, citywide invasion.
Why tarantulas may wander in California in fall
California tarantulas spend much of their lives in ground burrows. During mating season, mature males leave their burrows and travel in search of females, which generally stay near their own burrows. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources explained the behavior in a November 15, 2018 account: “What you are seeing are male tarantulas, looking for a female.” Its 2023 account describes October as tarantula season in California foothills and identifies the wandering males as Aphonopelma iodius.

- Some people call Tarantulas creepy crawlies, but this Tarantula stuffed animal is a cuddly cutie for sure.
- While these burrowers live in the ground and can get quite dirty, all 12 inches of this orange-striped arachnid are surface-washable for easy cleaning.
- Everyone knows that more legs mean a better hug from your furry friend, and this realistic plush toy has 8 hairy legs sprouting from its large round body.
- Crafted from top-notch, durable materials, your many-legged friend can handle any adventure you throw its way.
- Whether you’re an arachnophile or simply a lover of quality stuffed animals, people young and old will adore this plush toy Tarantula
A tarantula crossing a road can therefore be part of normal seasonal movement. That biological explanation does not, by itself, show that a large number of spiders are currently present in San Francisco or anywhere else.
How dangerous are California tarantulas?
UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program describes California tarantulas as ground-burrowing spiders with bodies about 1 to 2 inches long. It says their bites are not likely to be serious and, at worst, are similar to a bee sting. The publication date is not displayed on the cited UC IPM page.

Yes. A large spider seen around a Bay Area home is not necessarily a tarantula. UC IPM documents the harmless Mediterranean spider Zoropsis spinimana in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, Marin, and Santa Cruz counties. A photograph or a clear identification from a qualified local source is more reliable than size or a viral headline alone.
