The name is used in different places for at least three unrelated fish: mahi-mahi (the common dolphinfish, Coryphaena hippurus), the flathead grey mullet Rhinomugil cephalus, and the pinktail triggerfish Melichthys vidua. To identify a rocket fish accurately, you need its scientific name or the location and language in which the name was used.
Why the name “rocket fish” is ambiguous
Common fish names are often local, translated or informal. They can describe different species in separate fishing communities, so a shared name does not prove that the fish are related. The documented uses of “rocket fish” come from different regions and source types rather than from a single taxonomic authority.

Mahi-mahi: the Malayalam “rocket fish”
How to recognize it
When “rocket fish” means Coryphaena hippurus, it means the fish more widely known as mahi-mahi or common dolphinfish. The CMFRI profile describes a streamlined, laterally compressed body and a continuous long dorsal fin that starts near the head and runs toward the tail. Its reported colors are especially vivid: golden flanks, metallic blue and green on the back, and white to yellow on the lower surface.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The Malayalam name is evidence of regional usage, not a universal common name. Rhinomugil cephalus: the Godavari Wardoli or Rocket fish
A separate regional identity
The Godavari fishing-practices paper uses Wardoli or Rocket fish for Rhinomugil cephalus, a different species from mahi-mahi. Its observations are tied to the Godavari and its tributaries, so they should not be generalized to fish carrying the same name elsewhere.
The distinctive eye behavior reported
The paper describes protruding eyes and says the fish can keep its eyes above the water surface while the rest of the body remains in the water. That behavior is a feature reported for this regional account of Rhinomugil cephalus; it is not a diagnostic trait for all “rocket fish.”

How to identify the fish you actually saw
- Record the location. Country, coast, river system or snorkeling site can narrow the possible usage.
- Note the language and source. A Malayalam fish-market name, a Godavari fishing account and a Maui tour description are not interchangeable evidence.
- Describe visible traits. Body shape, fin arrangement, eye position and color pattern are more reliable than the nickname alone.
- Confirm the scientific name. Use a museum, fisheries agency, biodiversity board or peer-reviewed species account before making claims about habitat, diet or conservation.
Rocket fish habitat, diet and conservation
