Why Feral Chickens Are Causing Trouble on Jersey

Feral chicken flocks on Jersey prompted complaints about crowing, damaged gardens, road hazards and chasing joggers. Here’s why they multiplied and how the island responded.

Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, faced growing complaints about feral chicken flocks in 2019: residents reported predawn crowing, damaged gardens, birds in roads and chickens chasing joggers. The birds were likely abandoned or escaped domestic chickens, multiplying with few natural predators to check them. Jersey tried warnings, trapping, rehoming and culling, but officials described the early removals as modest and some control efforts as unsuccessful.

Why are there gangs of feral chickens in Jersey?

Jersey lies between England and France. The reports were about this island—not mainland Britain. Contemporary accounts said the flocks probably began with domestic chickens that owners abandoned, released or allowed to escape. In the States Assembly, Jersey’s environment minister urged people not to abandon chickens and said officials believed abandonment was a major cause. The Assembly transcript also records the local concern that Jersey has no foxes or comparable predators to keep the birds’ numbers in check.

With birds able to reproduce and few predators, small groups could grow into conspicuous flocks. The available reports do not establish a single island-wide population total.

What problems did residents report?

  • Noise: Residents complained about cockerels crowing as early as 3 a.m., according to NPR’s 2019 report.
  • Garden damage and scavenging: Scratching, pecking and feeding in gardens were recurring complaints. The Government of Jersey’s later account also lists refuse scavenging.
  • Road risks: Chickens in roads were described as a traffic hazard, and officials later cited road safety as a concern.
  • Chasing runners: Residents told NPR that chickens chased joggers. That does not establish that the birds were routinely attacking people, but it helps explain why encounters could feel intimidating.

The Jersey Evening Post reported about 40 complaints in 2019. Jersey officials also raised possible disease concerns, including avian influenza, Salmonella and Toxoplasmosis; those concerns should not be confused with evidence that a particular flock or bird was infected.

Are Jersey’s feral chickens dangerous?

The documented problems were chiefly nuisance and safety issues: noise, property damage, scavenging and birds entering roads. A chicken that chases someone can be alarming, but the reports do not show that the flocks posed a general threat of serious attacks. The clearer immediate risk was to traffic when birds were on roads.

Officials also cited possible disease risks. That is a reason to avoid handling feral birds or encouraging them to gather around food and refuse, not proof that every chicken carries disease.

What did Jersey do to control the flocks?

The response combined prevention, attempted removal and culling. Results were mixed, and removing birds at particular locations did not necessarily prevent others from gathering or multiplying elsewhere.

Measure What happened What it could—and could not—do
Public warnings Officials asked people not to feed feral chickens or abandon domestic animals. Addresses avoidable feeding and abandonment, but does not remove birds already established in an area.
Trapping The Government of Jersey later said trapping attempts were unsuccessful. Did not provide an effective removal method in the reported attempts.
Rehoming Officials said rehoming was largely unsuccessful because disruptive cockerels were returned. Moving birds only lasts if a suitable placement is available and the birds are not brought back.
Culling The Jersey Evening Post reported 35 chickens removed in initial 2019 culls. A Government of Jersey freedom-of-information response says a licensed contractor removed about 65 birds at three sites in 2020 using nighttime air-gun shooting, which officials described as humane and effective in that context. Can reduce numbers at targeted sites, but the 2019 minister described earlier culls as modest; removal alone does not prevent abandonment, feeding or recolonization.

Environment Minister John Young acknowledged the competing concerns: “We are in a situation where we have got animal lovers on the one hand and where we have got those who are experiencing a nuisance on the other. I can’t pretend to sit here and say I have got an answer to that.” Environmental-health director William Peggie similarly said, “We are now dealing with very large numbers – the culls that happened were quite modest.”

Can residents legally remove nuisance chickens?

The rules described in the 2019 States Assembly transcript apply to Jersey and should not be treated as the law across the UK. The transcript says feral chickens were not protected by Jersey’s Wildlife Law and that landowners could dispatch nuisance birds on their land using humane methods. It also says environmental-health intervention depended on permissions and nuisance procedures. For a specific incident, residents should check current local requirements and obtain any necessary permission rather than assume they can trap, move or kill birds.

Jersey’s minister also warned that feeding feral chickens or abandoning domestic animals was unlawful. The island’s legal position is local, and the source describes the situation in 2019; it is not a substitute for checking current advice from Jersey authorities.

How can residents protect a garden?

For an individual garden, physical exclusion is the most direct preventive step supported by the reported problems. A securely fitted chicken-wire fence or mesh barrier can help keep birds away from beds they scratch and peck. This protects a particular space; it does not reduce the wider flock.
