Does Fishing Hurt Fish? What Catch-and-Release Really Means

Fishing can harm fish even when they are released. Species, gear, handling, and water conditions all affect the risks of catch-and-release.

Yes. Fishing can injure, stress, impair, or kill fish—even when they are released. A fish swimming away is not proof that it will survive or avoid delayed effects. The harm varies with the species, gear, capture and handling methods, and conditions in the water. Careful catch-and-release practices can reduce avoidable harm, but they cannot make capture harmless.

How fishing can harm fish

Capture may cause a hook wound, exhaustion, and physiological stress. Handling and time out of water can add further stress. Some effects are immediate; others may appear after release.

NOAA Fisheries explains that a fish can die soon after release because of severe injury or predation. Stress or injury can also interfere with feeding or digestion, leading to death later. That is why observing a fish swim away does not establish that it survived.

The outcome depends on several factors, including species, hook placement, gear, how long the fish is played, handling, water conditions, and whether the fish has time to recover. A review hosted by the U.S. Geological Survey discusses injury, mortality, and sublethal physiological and behavioral effects, and emphasizes that species and fishing practices vary.

Does catch-and-release fishing reduce harm?

It can reduce some avoidable risks, but it does not guarantee survival. NOAA Fisheries describes release as a conservation strategy while cautioning that simply letting a fish go does not ensure it will live. A release also may leave a fish injured or impaired without causing immediate, visible death.

There is no single mortality percentage that applies to all recreational fishing, fish species, and conditions. For example, a NOAA Fisheries 2022 report describes one Atlantic bluefin tuna tagging project in which one of 63 deployed survival tags indicated a mortality—about 1.6%. That is an observation from that specific project, not a general catch-and-release survival rate.

Why species and conditions matter

In a 2008 study, researchers assessed brook trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and Arctic grayling played for one to five minutes. Under those tested conditions, physiological disturbances were minimal and within normal physiological tolerance limits. The study also found that prerelease air exposure and handling caused more physiological stress than hooking itself or playing time.

Those findings apply to the species and conditions studied; they do not show that all fish, capture methods, or handling practices are harmless. Water conditions matter, too. The National Park Service warns that unusually warm water, low flows, or fish crowded into small areas can increase stress and mortality risk, and recommends curtailing fishing in such circumstances.

How to release a fish with less avoidable harm

  • Use suitable tackle. Choose tackle suited to the fish and follow local regulations. NOAA Fisheries lists circle hooks, barbless hooks, and hooks with crimped barbs as options for catch-and-release fishing.
  • Limit the fight. Avoid playing a fish to exhaustion and return it promptly. Tired fish can take longer to recover.
  • Keep the fish wet and minimize handling. Reduce time out of the water and avoid unnecessary contact. Use wet hands when handling the fish.
  • Use an appropriate net when needed. The National Park Service recommends rubber or small, soft, knotless mesh to reduce handling time, stress, and potential injury.
  • Wait for recovery before release. Do not release a fish until it is fully recovered.
  • Consider the conditions. Reconsider fishing when water is unusually warm, flows are low, or fish are concentrated in a small area.

Do fish feel pain when caught?

The sources cited here document injury, physiological stress, impairment, and mortality; they do not settle every question about fish subjective experience. A measurable stress response alone does not prove a particular human-like experience, and the absence of a particular human brain structure would not, by itself, prove that fish cannot experience pain. A USGS-hosted review identifies animal-welfare questions as an area requiring better understanding.
