For routine feeding in a managed pond, choose a commercial carp or koi pellet labeled for your fish’s size and growth stage. Common carp are omnivores and also eat natural pond foods, so pellets and other added feeds should complement what the pond already provides. Feed in portions the fish consume, and avoid leaving uneaten food to decay.
What do carp eat naturally?
Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) are omnivores. They forage on the pond bottom as well as in the water, eating benthic organisms such as insect larvae and snails, along with plankton, vegetation and detritus. Natural food can also include small crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates. The mix available depends on the pond.
FAO describes feeds used in carp pond culture as complements to natural food. That matters when deciding how much added feed to offer: a pond with abundant natural food does not present the same feeding situation as one where fish depend more heavily on supplied feed.
What should you feed carp in a pond?
Use a formulated pellet for routine feeding
A commercial carp or koi pellet is the most practical routine feed for a managed pond. Choose a product labeled for carp or koi and suited to the fish’s size and life stage. Growth-stage needs differ, and aquafeed is formulated to provide digestible protein and energy-rich fats. Read the product label rather than assuming one pellet suits every carp.

- Provides necessary animal and vegetable proteins
- With 35% protein, fish meal is the first ingredient and supports tissue and muscle development
- Great for Koi, Goldfish and other pond fish
- Floating pond fish food that's suitable for all seasons
- Fish oil, wheat germ meal and alfalfa meal to enhance eye, heart and cognitive functions
Consider whether a floating or sinking pellet works better for your pond and fish. Floating feed makes it easier to see how much is being eaten; sinking feed may suit fish that feed closer to the bottom. In either case, observe feeding and adjust the amount so substantial leftovers do not accumulate.
Use bran, grains, or oilcake only as supplementary feed
Rice or wheat bran mixed with oilcake, as well as grains and other farm-made feeds, are used in carp pond culture. They can supplement natural food, but should not automatically be treated as a complete, nutritionally balanced diet. Check whether any packaged feed is labeled complete or supplementary, and use supplementary ingredients within a feeding plan that accounts for the pond’s natural food.

Let natural pond foods contribute
Carp can forage for plankton, detritus, aquatic insects, mollusks, small crustaceans and plant material. These foods are part of their natural diet, but their availability and nutritional contribution vary by pond. Do not assume that every pond provides enough natural food to support the fish without additional feeding.
Can carp eat bread, worms, or dough?
Worms and dough balls are documented as carp fishing bait, but that use does not show that either is a balanced long-term diet for captive fish. Bread likewise should not replace a formulated feed: the available guidance does not establish it as a complete carp diet. For routine feeding, choose a labeled carp or koi pellet and use other foods only when their role in the diet is clear.

How much should you feed carp?
There is no single safe daily ration for every pond. The appropriate amount depends on fish size and total biomass, water temperature, how much natural food is available, and the feed’s label and formulation. Follow the product’s directions, watch how the fish respond, and adjust portions rather than relying on a universal percentage or fixed quantity.
- Check that the feed is intended for carp or koi and matches the fish’s life stage and size.
- Offer a portion the fish can consume without leaving substantial uneaten feed.
- Observe feeding and the pond afterward; reduce or adjust portions if leftovers accumulate.
- Reassess when fish grow, water temperature changes, or natural food availability shifts.
Uneaten feed can harm water quality. European Commission aquaculture guidance warns, “Over-feeding often results in a deterioration of the aquaculture environment.” That is a practical reason to avoid adding more food simply because fish gather when it is offered.

How to choose a carp feed
- Life stage and pellet size: match the product to the fish’s growth stage and ability to eat the pellet.
- Feed type: distinguish a complete feed from a supplementary one; bran or grain mixtures are not automatically complete diets.
- Floating or sinking: choose the form that suits how and where your fish feed, while making it possible to monitor leftovers.
- Formulation and conditions: check the label for nutrient and temperature suitability rather than applying one feed plan to every pond.
- Waste: favor a portion and feeding routine that do not leave substantial uneaten food in the water.
