What Kind of Fish Are in Lake Victoria?

Nile perch, Nile tilapia and dagaa dominate Lake Victoria’s commercial fishery, but historical accounts describe a much broader fish community.

Lake Victoria’s best-known commercial fish are Nile perch (Lates niloticus), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and dagaa (Rastrineobola argentea). They are the three species highlighted as dominant in the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization’s Nile Perch Fisheries Management Plan III for Lake Victoria, 2021–2025. They are not a complete list of the lake’s fish.

Which fish are most prominent in Lake Victoria’s fishery?

The LVFO plan describes the lake’s commercial fishery as dominated by three species:

  • Nile perch (Lates niloticus)
  • Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
  • Dagaa (Rastrineobola argentea)

“Dominant” here refers to their role in the fishery; it does not mean these are the only fish living in Lake Victoria.

What other kinds of fish live in the lake?

Lake Victoria has a broader fish community that includes cichlids and other groups. Historical FAO material describes haplochromine and tilapiine cichlids as important in the earlier fishery, and names genera such as Bagrus, Clarias, Mormyrus, Barbus, Protopterus and Synodontis as examples of other fish. These historical examples should not be read as a complete list of species living in the lake today.

How has Lake Victoria’s fish community changed?

The fishery has changed over time. FAO’s historical account describes an earlier fishery in which tilapiine and haplochromine cichlids were important, followed by changes associated with the introduction of non-indigenous tilapias and Nile perch. This history does not establish that every native fish disappeared; it shows that the fish community and fishery have changed.

How many fish species are in Lake Victoria?

There is no definitive current total established by the sources cited here. A historical FAO account notes conflicting estimates: some reports put the number at 170 species, while Greenwood (1981), as reported by FAO, estimated that up to 350 might be present. Both figures are historical estimates, not a verified present-day count.

The LVFO’s 2021–2025 plan identifies the three dominant commercial species, but it is not a current, complete species checklist. An exact present-day total or species-by-species account of abundance would require a recent taxonomic inventory or lake-wide survey.

Are these the lake’s only important fish?

No. Nile perch, Nile tilapia and dagaa are the three dominant commercial species named in the LVFO plan; cichlids and other fish groups matter to the lake’s wider diversity and history. The available sources do not provide a consistent current comparison of abundance or conservation status for every species, so they do not support a ranking of all Lake Victoria fish.
