The adults appear to be trying to feed the same chick with red crop milk, a digestive secretion they regurgitate for their young. The feeding posture and blood-like color make the moment look alarming.
What does the video show?
Two adult flamingos appear to bring their bills together over a chick. From the camera angle, one bird’s bill can look as if it is striking or bludgeoning the other’s head, while vivid red liquid seems to run toward the chick. Scroll’s account identifies the scene as two adults trying to feed the same chick, not a documented attack.
What is the red liquid?
It is identified in the reports as red crop milk, a secretion associated with the flamingos’ digestive tracts. The adults regurgitate it to feed their young. It resembles blood in the clip, but the explanation given by Scroll and the Science Channel caption is that the chick is being fed crop milk, not blood from a deliberate wound.
Why does the moment look like an attack?
| What viewers may see | What the reports describe |
|---|---|
| The adults’ bills appear to be aimed at one another’s heads. | The birds are positioned around the same chick as they try to feed it. |
| Bright red liquid looks like blood. | The liquid is identified as red crop milk regurgitated for the chick. |
| One adult seems to be attacking the other. | The scene is described as chick feeding, not aggression. |
The Science Channel’s February 19, 2020 Instagram caption, reproduced by Scroll, put the apparent-versus-actual contrast this way: “So, we know what you’re thinking… and no, one #flamingo is not bludgeoning the head of another while its offspring feeds on the blood. These flamingos are trying to feed the same chick with red crop milk.”
