A juvenile bottlenose dolphin found in distress in a Florida canal died in March 2022. Researchers later confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) in the animal, reporting the case in a peer-reviewed paper in 2024. The finding shows that this H5N1 lineage can infect dolphins; it does not show that dolphins are spreading the virus to one another.
What happened to the Florida dolphin?
On March 29, 2022, a juvenile male common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was found in distress in a canal near Horseshoe Beach in Dixie County, Florida. The dolphin died before the University of Florida Marine Animal Rescue Program arrived. Researchers identified highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1), clade 2.3.4.4b, in the animal. The case was published in 2024, two years after the death. The peer-reviewed case report describes the findings.
What did the tests show?
The researchers found meningoencephalitis— inflammation involving the brain and its membranes—and detected the highest viral load in brain tissue. They also detected the virus in lung tissue. Together, the findings establish infection in this dolphin and show prominent involvement of the central nervous system; they do not establish how the animal was exposed.
Does this mean bird flu is spreading among dolphins?
No. This case documents infection in one dolphin, not a dolphin outbreak or a dolphin-to-dolphin transmission chain. The case report discusses H5N1 infections in other cetaceans and marine mammals, and the Marine Mammal Commission’s December 2024 fact sheet summarizes detections in seals, sea lions and cetaceans in multiple regions. Those records indicate that the virus has crossed into varied mammalian hosts and make wildlife surveillance important, but separate detections do not by themselves prove transmission between dolphins. How did the dolphin get bird flu?
The route of exposure for this dolphin has not been established in the cited case report. The finding confirms infection, but it does not identify a particular infected bird, contaminated site, food source or other route. Claims about exactly how this animal caught H5N1 would go beyond the available evidence.
What do Florida’s bird-flu reports say?
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission lists the dolphin among its 2022 HPAI events. The latest-news item displayed on the agency page during the cited reporting period was dated November 2024; it said HPAI H5 had been confirmed in 35 Florida counties since January 2022. That is the agency’s reported figure and timeframe, not a statewide total verified through September 2026. The FWC page includes its event information and updates.

The Marine Mammal Commission also reported 597,832 bird and 50,785 mammal mortalities in South America from October 2022 through December 2023, with the bulk among seabirds and marine mammals in Peru and Chile. These are regional wildlife mortality figures for that period—not Florida dolphin deaths or a count of infections. The commission’s December 2024 fact sheet gives the geography and timeframe.
Can bird flu spread from dolphins to people?
The dolphin case does not establish dolphin-to-human transmission. It is evidence of H5N1 infection in a mammal, not evidence that a person caught the virus from this dolphin. The case authors wrote that “The increased prevalence of A(H5N1) viruses in atypical avian hosts and its cross-species transmission into mammalian species highlights the public health importance of continued disease surveillance and biosecurity protocols.” This is a reason to take precautions around wildlife, not proof of a transmission event to a person.

What should you do if you find a sick dolphin or dead bird?
Do not approach or touch sick, distressed or dead wild animals, including marine mammals, and keep pets away. Do not try to handle, sample or test an animal. Report wildlife mortalities to the appropriate state wildlife management agency. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides this guidance for wildlife encounters: avian influenza safety guidance.
