No reliable global number is known. Scientists have documented plastic ingestion, entanglement, illness and individual deaths in marine animals, but there is no worldwide tally of fish deaths that can be attributed specifically to plastic pollution. Existing fish statistics measure exposure in sampled animals—not the number killed.
What scientists have actually measured
The strongest broad fish evidence comes from a 2021 review by Savoca, McInturf and Hazen in Global Change Biology. It compiled records for 171,774 individual marine fish representing 555 species.
| Reported figure | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 171,774 fish | Individuals included in the studies reviewed | Not all fish in the ocean, and not fish that died |
| 555 species | Species represented in those records | Not the total number of affected species worldwide |
| 386 species | Species with documented plastic ingestion in the compiled records | Not 386 species proven to have died from plastic |
| 210 commercially important species | Commercial species among those with documented ingestion | Not a count of fisheries losses or deaths |
| 26% | Reported ingestion incidence in studies that accounted for microplastics | Not a mortality rate or the percentage of all fish worldwide |
These numbers show that plastic exposure is widespread across the studied species. They do not provide the population size, time period, geographic coverage or causal evidence needed to calculate a global fish-death total.
Why an ingestion statistic cannot answer a death question
Finding plastic inside a fish establishes ingestion. It does not, by itself, establish that the fish became ill, died, or would have survived without the plastic. Some studies examine living fish, while others document particular injuries or stranded animals. Those measurements answer different questions.

- Ingestion: plastic is found in the digestive tract or tissues.
- Entanglement: fishing line, nets, bags or other debris restrict movement or cause injury.
- Illness or impairment: feeding, growth, reproduction or organ function may be affected.
- Mortality attributed to plastic: investigators determine that plastic caused the death, rather than merely being present.
A defensible global estimate would require representative sampling of fish populations, consistent monitoring over time, a way to distinguish plastic-caused deaths from other causes, and enough observations to scale results across oceans and species. The reviewed evidence does not provide that estimate.
How plastic can kill or injure marine animals
UNEP describes ingestion-related harm and mortality in marine animals. NOAA also documents entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris. Restricted movement can lead to drowning or starvation; cutting or constricting material can cause wounds, trauma and infection.

Those mechanisms apply to some fish, but evidence from other animal groups must not be relabeled as a fish statistic. NOAA’s often-cited estimate of hundreds of thousands of annual deaths concerns marine mammals and sea turtles, not fish. It cannot be used to answer this question.
An older NOAA-hosted appendix likewise warned that many documented impacts concerned individual animals rather than measured population-level effects. That distinction remains important: a collection of tragic incidents is not automatically a global census.

What localized studies can—and cannot—tell us
A study listed by NIST in 2026 sampled 204 fish from 13 taxa in the North Pacific Garbage Patch. In that sample, reported ingestion occurrence differed by taxon; blue sharks, for example, had a reported occurrence of 78%.
This is useful evidence about a particular region, set of taxa and sampling design. It is not a global rate, and it does not report how many sampled fish died. Results from a garbage-patch sample cannot be extrapolated to every ocean, habitat or fish species without additional representative data.

How to judge a claim about fish deaths
When you see a number online, check each of these five dimensions:
- Outcome: Is the number about ingestion, entanglement, illness or confirmed mortality?
- Animal group: Does it concern fish specifically, or mammals, turtles, seabirds or all marine animals?
- Geography: Is it a tank, beach, fishery, garbage patch, region or worldwide estimate?
- Sample and method: How many animals were examined, and how were they selected?
- Causation: Did investigators attribute death to plastic, or only detect plastic in an animal?
A claim that fails these checks may still describe a real environmental problem, but it should not be presented as the number of fish killed globally.

Quick Recap
What can responsibly be concluded
- Plastic pollution is documented in hundreds of marine fish species, including species important to commercial fisheries.
- Plastic can contribute to injury, impaired health and death in individual marine animals through ingestion and entanglement.
- No reliable, peer-reviewed global total of fish deaths caused by plastic pollution is established by the evidence summarized here.
- The absence of a single number does not mean the harm is trivial; it means current monitoring cannot convert varied observations into one defensible worldwide mortality count.
