The familiar aquarium betta, Betta splendens—also called the Siamese fighting fish—originated in mainland Southeast Asia. Thailand is identified as its centre of origin and the place where its domestication began. Its broader native range extends through parts of Thailand, Cambodia, southern Vietnam and the northern Malay Peninsula.
Which fish does “betta” mean?
“Betta” is the name of a genus, not just one species. In an aquarium-origin question, it usually means Betta splendens, the fish sold as the Siamese fighting fish. Other betta species have different distributions and natural histories, so their origins should not be substituted for those of B. splendens.
Where is Betta splendens native?
The Convention on Biological Diversity Biosafety Clearing-House identifies mainland Southeast Asia, particularly central Thailand and nearby parts of the lower Mekong region, as the centre of origin for Betta splendens. The U.S. Geological Survey describes a wider native range that includes the following areas:

What habitats did bettas come from?
Wild Betta splendens occupy shallow freshwater environments that may be standing or slow moving. Documented habitat types include:
- marshes and floodplains
- canals and other quiet waterways
- rice paddies
- vegetated pools and similar shallow freshwater sites
These habitats can expand, contract or connect with one another as seasonal water levels change. Dense vegetation provides cover and structure, while calm water suits a fish adapted to low-flow conditions.

A University of Florida IFAS Extension account reports a mean depth of about 5 cm for one studied Thai population. That is a population-specific observation, not a universal depth requirement or a species-wide average. Wild bettas did not originate in aquariums, even though captive tanks can imitate some features of their natural environment.
How did bettas become aquarium fish?
The CBD species record states that domestication of Betta splendens also originated in Thailand. The available records do not establish a precise year or one clearly defined domestication event, so a single date should not be assigned to the process.

Over generations, people selected fish for traits useful or attractive in captivity, producing ornamental stocks with the colors, patterns and fin shapes familiar in the aquarium trade. Those cultivated forms should not be treated as a visual or genetic template for wild fish.
Wild bettas and domesticated bettas are not identical
The CBD record distinguishes wild populations from domesticated ornamental stocks. Wild populations retain their own genetic diversity and population structure; captive lines have been shaped by human breeding and may represent a narrower set of selected traits.

Why are bettas so closely associated with Thailand?
Thailand’s connection is both biological and cultural. The country’s Department of Fisheries says the Thai fighting fish was approved as Thailand’s national aquatic animal on 5 February 2019. The explanation emphasizes long-standing familiarity, cultural ties, the fish’s distinctiveness, and Thailand’s history of breeding and commerce.
That national designation describes Thailand’s cultural association with the fish; it does not establish exclusive biological ownership. The species’ native range crosses national boundaries.

- Bettas have an organ called a labyrinth, which allows them to breathe air as well as getting oxygen from the water via their gills. that's the reason why they also come up to the water surface and relax. Leaf hammocks make great places for your betta to take a short break after swimming

Are all betta species from the same place?
No. The genus Betta contains multiple species, each with its own range. A prominent example is Betta simplex, the Krabi mouth-brooding betta. An IUCN account published in 2025 describes B. simplex as Critically Endangered and restricted to Krabi Province. That assessment applies to B. simplex, not automatically to the common aquarium species, B. splendens.
When checking a conservation status, care guide or origin claim, confirm the scientific name rather than relying on the word “betta” alone.
What is the most accurate one-sentence answer?
