Petco’s Raleigh aquatics information says locations throughout the United States offer fish ranging from bettas and tetras to mollies and zebra fish. That statement does not guarantee that every location carries every species.
How to check whether your local Petco has fish
- Open Petco’s store locator or a specific store listing.
- Look for an aquatics or live-fish department indication in that store’s services.
- Call the store to confirm the species, sizes and quantities currently available; live inventory can change quickly.
- Ask whether the fish are suitable for your aquarium’s temperature, water parameters and existing tank mates.

Can Petco ship live freshwater fish?
Yes. Petco sells live fish and invertebrates online. Aquatic-life orders are sent with Next Day Shipping after processing. Petco’s shipping policy says processing typically takes two to five days and can take up to 11 days, so “next day” refers to the delivery method after the order is processed, not necessarily the time from checkout to arrival.
Live-arrival guarantee
Petco states that aquatic life is guaranteed alive for seven days after arrival. If a fish dies during that period, contact Customer Care and provide a photograph to make a loss claim. Aquatic life cannot be returned to Petco stores; refunds are handled through Customer Care under the company’s policy.
Why shipping can be a poor fit
- You must have a fully cycled, temperature-stable aquarium ready when the shipment arrives.
- Processing and weather-related timing can make the total wait longer than a store purchase.
- Live shipments require someone to receive and acclimate the fish promptly.
What you need before buying a fish
Petco also sells aquarium equipment and water-care products, including:
- Tank, lid and appropriately sized filter
- Heater and thermometer for tropical species
- Lighting, substrate and décor
- Water conditioner and beneficial-bacteria products
- Test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH
- Species-appropriate food and a quarantine container, when possible
Choose the aquarium and equipment before choosing the fish. A betta, goldfish, cichlid and schooling tetra have very different space, filtration and social requirements. Never select tank mates solely because they are displayed together in a store.

Store purchase policies can differ
In-store return or refund rules may be set locally. For example, Petco’s Raleigh page describes a 30-day freshwater-fish refund period requiring a receipt and an established habitat. Treat that as a Raleigh-specific example, not a nationwide promise; ask your own store for its current terms before buying.
How Petco sources freshwater fish
Petco’s corporate responsibility statement says more than 95 percent of the aquatic life it offers, including all of its freshwater fish and corals, is aquacultured. This is a company-reported sourcing statement rather than a guarantee about a particular fish’s individual breeding facility.
Is Petco a good place to buy freshwater fish?
Petco is convenient when you want a nearby store, online ordering and one-stop access to tanks, filtration and water-care supplies. The main trade-off is variability: local stock, staff expertise and store policies differ. Compare a Petco fish with any alternative by checking four things:
- Tank fit: adult size, swimming space and filtration demand.
- Compatibility: temperature, water chemistry, aggression and schooling needs.
- Availability: immediate local inspection versus shipped selection.
- Support terms: delivery timing, live-arrival guarantee and refund procedure.
If the local listing shows no aquatics department, or the species you need is unavailable, an online order may expand the choices. For a first aquarium, buying locally lets you inspect the fish and ask questions before transport.
