How Many Endemic Freshwater Fish Are in California?

The best-supported answer is about 79 endemic native inland fish taxa, calculated from CDFW and UC Davis’s 2015 assessment of 124 native inland fishes and a 64% California-endemic share. Other totals differ because they count species, taxa, or unique populations under different scopes.

About 79 endemic native inland fish taxa is the best-supported estimate. California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the University of California, Davis, evaluated 124 native inland fishes—defined as fishes that breed in fresh water—and reported that 64% are endemic to California. The calculation is 124 × 0.64 = 79.36, so the defensible wording is “about 79,” not an exact species census.

What “endemic” means here

An endemic fish is found naturally in California but nowhere else within the comparison area used for the assessment. The 2015 CDFW–UC Davis assessment found that 64% of its 124 native inland fishes were California-endemic. Another 19% also occurred in Nevada or Oregon, so “native to California” and “endemic to California” are not identical categories.

The assessment’s inland-fish definition includes fishes breeding in fresh water. Depending on the source, that biological scope can include resident species and anadromous species—fish that reproduce in freshwater but spend part of their lives in the ocean.

Why published totals differ

California fish totals change when authors count different biological units, include different life histories, or use different taxonomic treatments. These are the principal reference points:

Source Unit counted Scope and result How it relates to the endemic estimate
CDFW and UC Davis, 2015 Native inland fishes 124 evaluated; 64% endemic to California; 19% also found in Nevada or Oregon Provides the calculation for about 79 endemic taxa (124 × 0.64)
CDFW, Atlas of the Biodiversity of California, second edition Species and unique fish populations 69 native resident and anadromous species; almost two-thirds of 124 recognized unique fish populations endemic Uses both species and population-level accounting, so it is not a direct duplicate of the 79-taxon calculation
CDFW Native Fish Program Fish taxa More than 130 native fish taxa across six major zoogeographic regions and more than 20 watersheds “Taxa” can include units treated differently from the 124-fish assessment and reflects a current program description
Moyle and Davis, California Fish and Game, 2000 Species 67 native resident or anadromous species, 53 non-native species, and five marine species occurring in fresh water An older statewide list with a different scope and taxonomic vintage

How the estimate is calculated

  1. Start with the 124 native inland fishes evaluated by CDFW and UC Davis in 2015.
  2. Apply the reported endemic share: 64%.
  3. Calculate 124 × 0.64 = 79.36.
  4. Round to an appropriately qualified estimate: about 79 endemic native inland fish taxa.

The decimal result should not be presented as a precise count. A percentage applied to a rounded or revised group does not establish that exactly 79 currently recognized species exist, and taxonomic revisions can move the total.

Where California’s native freshwater fish occur

CDFW’s Native Fish Program describes more than 130 native fish taxa distributed across six major zoogeographic regions and more than 20 watersheds. The Central Valley is a major center of native-fish diversity. Endemism is therefore a statewide pattern expressed through distinct regional and watershed faunas, rather than a single uniform fish community.

What the number says about conservation

The estimate represents exceptional geographic restriction as well as biodiversity. CDFW reports that at least 100 native fishes are declining, moving toward extinction, or already extinct. Because many endemic fish have ranges limited to particular watersheds or regions, habitat alteration, altered flow, invasive species, water-quality problems, and other pressures can affect a large share of a species’ total global range within California.

The conservation picture should not be inferred from the 79 figure alone: the number of endemic taxa depends on whether a source counts species, broader taxa, or recognized unique populations, and on which taxonomic edition it follows.

Which number should you use?

  • For the question “How many endemic freshwater fish are in California?”, use about 79 and identify it as the 2015 CDFW–UC Davis calculation.
  • For a current program-wide inventory, cite CDFW’s wording of more than 130 native fish taxa, while noting that this is not an endemic-only total.
  • For historical species comparisons, specify whether resident and anadromous fishes are included and identify the publication year.
  • Do not treat “69 species,” “124 unique populations,” “124 native inland fishes,” and “over 130 taxa” as interchangeable counts.

The Bottom Line

California has about 79 endemic native inland fish taxa under the strongest directly stated calculation: 64% of 124 native inland fishes evaluated by CDFW and UC Davis in 2015. The figure is approximate because sources count different units, biological scopes, and taxonomic groupings.
