Feed garter snakes clearly identified, whole fish that contain little or no thiaminase, and rotate fish with other complete prey. Salmon and trout are specifically identified by the RSPCA as suitable because they lack thiaminase. A varied diet is safer and more nutritionally complete than relying on fish alone.
Which fish are suitable?
Use whole prey whenever possible, and buy feeder fish from a reputable source. The following options are identified in the cited husbandry guidance:

Thiaminase information can vary with fish identity and source. If a package does not clearly identify the species, choose a known alternative or ask a reptile veterinarian.
Why thiaminase matters
Thiaminase is an enzyme found in many fish. As PetMD veterinarian Maria Zayas explains, it breaks down thiamine (vitamin B1) in a snake’s body and can cause deficiency when exposure is repeated. The RSPCA therefore advises choosing fish with very little or no thiaminase.

A fish being sold as a feeder does not make it safe by itself. Regularly feeding high-thiaminase species, especially as the main diet, can create a nutritional problem even when the snake continues to eat enthusiastically.
Whole fish versus fillets
Fillets are convenient but are not complete prey. Removing the bones and organs removes calcium and other nutrients supplied by a whole vertebrate. The RSPCA warns that a snake fed only filleted fish will miss nutrients such as calcium.

Choose appropriately sized whole fish when available. If fish is used as a meal component rather than whole prey, it should not displace the complete prey that supplies the rest of the diet.
How to offer fish safely
- Identify the species. Check the label or supplier information; do not rely on a generic “minnow” or “feeder fish” description.
- Select the format. Frozen-thawed whole fish provide more predictable sourcing and handling. Live guppies or platies can be used when obtained from a reputable captive source.
- Thaw safely. Thaw frozen prey completely and offer it with feeding tongs rather than by hand.
- Remove leftovers. Take uneaten fish out promptly so water and enclosure hygiene do not deteriorate.
- Record the meal. Note the prey type and the snake’s weight and body condition so a pattern of overfeeding or poor growth is visible.
How large should a fish be?
Prey should not be wider than the snake’s mid-body, according to PetMD. ReptiFiles gives a similar practical limit: prey should be no more than about 1.5 times the snake’s width or up to 10% of body weight. Use the smaller, more conservative choice for a young, thin, ill, or inexperienced snake, and adjust for the individual rather than treating either figure as a universal schedule.

Can garter snakes live on fish alone?
A fish-only diet is not established as a universal plan for every garter-snake species, age, or health status. Rotate fish with commercially sourced earthworms and appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents or other complete prey recommended for the individual snake. Buy worms from reputable suppliers; do not collect them outdoors, where pesticide and parasite exposure is harder to control.
Fish should complement, not replace, dietary variety. Juveniles, breeding females, and snakes with illness or a history of deficiency may need a plan set by a reptile veterinarian.

Parasites, sourcing, and warning signs
Feeder fish can transmit parasites, so source them through established commercial or captive suppliers and keep storage equipment clean. Avoid introducing wild-caught fish or worms unless a veterinarian has specifically advised it.
Contact a reptile veterinarian promptly if a snake has repeatedly eaten high-thiaminase fish or develops weakness, tremors, loss of coordination, abnormal head or neck posture, seizures, or other neurologic changes. These signs require professional assessment rather than a home vitamin remedy.
